I join mathematics modelling competition so I have to solve such like a simple optimization and the competition committee allows us to solve the modelling using software. Can you tell or suggest me what software i have to use?
But if you think that i should not use a software to solve it, then what method must i use to solve the modelling? Thanks:)

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

Hi Dina,
I have not done a whole lot of modeling, so I can't offer you the best of advice on the tradeoffs for one software over the other. In American universities, scientists and engineers at the undergraduate level tend to use a whole lot of Matlab. My math friends tended to use Mathematica. At the more advanced level, people use more esoteric tools often unique to their discipline.
I seem to recall that both of those are really expensive. Scilab is the opensource equivalent of Matlab. It is free, and met my extremely modest and infrequent general modeling needs when I was in college.
