Organic Chemistry #1

So firstly, in organic chemistry... There are compounds which are complex/time consuming to write using the full form of the Lewis Dot Structure. So we chemists, (Lol, I'm not a chemist.) tend to shorten it by simply drawing lines.

Like so... Propane Propane

That is propane or C3_3H8_8. Some of you maybe thinking, how is that propane?

Simply, we assume that all the vertices are carbons. And if there are no specific bonds to those vertices then we assume that the carbons are bonded to hydrogens. And remember, a carbon atom can have up to four bonds.

So now, using those two assumptions... Here we have the expanded propane. expanded propane. expanded propane.

Now notice, it is indeed C3_3H8_8.

The reason why we shorten it is because when it gets to more complex compounds. It would be tiresome to draw all the lines and etc.

So this is how organic chemists write compounds in these shortened form of the Lewis Dot Structure. Soon, I shall get into the nomenclature of compounds and the functional groups.

If you have any questions, comments, queries etc. Feel free to comment. ^^ Well, that was quite short. Hahha...

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

How would we draw Glycerol ? Thank You in advance. (Some pictures would be helpful)

Alright, so this is glycerol Glycerol Glycerol.

What do we see? 3 carbons /Rightarrow/Rightarrow a drawing with 3 vertices.

We ignore the hydrogens but... we have to explicitly state the hydroxide groups below.

And all the carbons have 4 bonds so, we can just draw 3 vertices with hydroxide sticking out.

Like so, Glycerol short Glycerol short.
