This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

For just the word CARTE, there are 5! ways to arrange the 5 letters, or 120 ways. If we want the letters A and E to always be adjacentto each other than treat them both as 1 letter. i.e ( AE and EA is the same). Now, there are only 4 letters ( C,AE/EA,R,T) that can be arrange or 4! ways. 4! is 24. Since we want to know how many ways CARTE can be pemutated with no A or E coming adjacently, simply take 120-24= 96 ways.

if u write AECRTE and in similar way u write EACRTE. according to u when we are taking AE as single word EA has no importance . which is 100% wrong because when we arranging these 5 letters in 5! ways both of the above will come ..

so according to me it should be 4!X2! =48.. so total no of permutations is 120-48=72.
