This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Honestly speaking Karan I am also having same problem, and like you I also can't understand what to do in this situation.

The Same situation I'am also facing..!! I'am also spend too much time on it. I'am also an dropper. And understand 'Karan' Problem. The major problem is that dropper's feel boring in solving The Question's which They encountered Previous year, i.e Question's which They had solved Previously in their Coaching materials and some Textbook e.t.c. So brilliant gives an new extremely good variety of Question's, Which really helps great. Obeviously many of them are above The JEE level. But still They can help in opening of mind. And Personally I feel that After Joining Brilliant My level of thinking is upgraded. Since Now I can create Question's From my own mind. But Due to less Practising of our main courses (Specially in ChemistryChemistry ) it affect's to me also. I tried to minimize the time which i spent on brilliant but unsuccessful in it. Since Brilliant Becomes important Part of my life now. :)

Mathematics is all about basics. Unfortunately all the standard books lay emphasis on solving tough questions involving exotic formulas. Students marvel at the cutting speed of theorems. It is like a child is given a calculator. Wow!!! So fast. And so easy. Child is mesmerized. It does not help anyone. If you 'dropper', (please note that the word has been coined by you and not by me, as I do not agree there) allow me to be frank, brutally frank then I must say that your failure in the first attempt was not because you were not knowing Mathematics per se (I believe all coaching institutes take you through the drill and that too very expeditiously), it is because you lack basic understanding.. Similar analogy will be knowing the entire dictionary but having never heard of grammar and attempting a Chetan Bhagat. Please now on wards concentrate on your basics. I know no formula, as I derive one from the basics every time I need. I have to admit here that it takes time to reach this clarity. Admitting that it is a tall order but nevertheless it is a target that I have set for myself worth achieving in a life time.

@Rajen Kapur Agree with you and sir But the major factor of failure was definitely not the mathematics but it is 'Chemistry'. which lowers my rank Very much In my views it is really not very much interesting subject except Organic. and yes now I'am continuously concentrating on my basics.

@Deepanshu Gupta We are alike in this respect. On a lighter note, take help of your GF, if you have one. Girls are generally comfortable with Chemistry.

@Rajen Kapur Hahaha... Totally agree with you.. But the problem is that the girl(my good friend ) which I know is not belongs to Science stream .. So still battle with chemistry continues..!!

I am no expert and have never given the JEE exam(will give the upcoming one)(JEE 2015),, but i feel that once your course is over, atleast you are done with all concepts,, you might have somethings u might have forgotten etc, but they are just things that you will expertise once you look at it ,, then u can spend quite a bit of time on brilliant,, but if not then work on them first,, and spend less time on brilliant,,, Brilliant is surely awesome and problem solving helps you whether you want JEE or a pure course in any subject,, But lets face it, it does have some distractions,, like it will become time killing if you interact more and solve less,, Also,, if u are not clear with concepts,, the scarier problems might damage your self esteem causing you to give up or lose hope,, so i would say spend some time on brilliant,, and increase the time you spend as your course progresses(within limits however,, often reading more books brushing more concepts is better than doing brilliant, that depends on how much you have progressed, if u are really good at your subjects,, then surely brilliant will help you ),,, use brilliant as a motivator to become even better,,

-DISCLAIMER- I do not take any responsibility for whatever damage might occur from following my advice, these are just my views

I like your cautionary approach. My advice to Karan is not to neglect Chemistry. As for Mathematics do Brilliant problems specially Probability, Combinatorics and Geometry (3-D). IIT-JEE is a test of endurance. Build stamina. Best of luck on 24-05-2015.

Rajen Kapur - 6 years, 8 months ago

Let me tell u guyz the problems in brilliant are really helpful if u want to take up olympiads but jee is mostly based on ncert syllabus so practice more mcq's and get suited to exam type atmosphere rather than just solving tough problems.Even i am a dropper and will be giving jee again in 2015. If you are thinking jee seriously better spend quality time with suggested books .
