This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

I used some simple analitical geometry and get the side of the square is 83\frac{8}{3} and thus the area is (83)2=649\left(\frac{8}{3}\right)^2=\frac{64}{9}

yes

how did you do it

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

Log in to reply

Just put the triangle in the Cartesian diagram with the coordinates are (0,0),(4,0) and(0,8)

Poetri Sonya - 6 years, 5 months ago

Log in to reply

@Poetri Sonya But how to maximize

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

Log in to reply

@Rajdeep Dhingra The largest square in the triangle is when the square's coordinates are (0,0),(0,x),(x,0)(0,0),(0,x),(x,0)and(x,x)(x,x) with (x,x)(x,x) lies in the hypotenuse .

Poetri Sonya - 6 years, 5 months ago

Log in to reply

@Poetri Sonya so

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Poetri Sonya Please could you give the full solution

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

Log in to reply

@Rajdeep Dhingra Since (x,x)(x,x) lies in the hypotenuse, it lies in the line y=2x+8y=-2x+8. Then x=2x+8x=-2x+8 3x=83x=8 x=83x=\frac{8}{3} So the side is 83\dfrac{8}{3}

You should comment on his solution and ask him to clarify.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

This the procedure to do this kind of a sum:

Let the side of the required square be aa.

Length of the remaining parts of the two legs are respectively 8a8-a and 4a4-a.

So the total area which is 12.a.(8a)+a2+12.a.(4a)\frac{1}{2}.a.(8-a)+a^{2}+\frac{1}{2}.a.(4-a) will be equal to 1616 (the area of the whole triangle)

Solving the equation you get x=83x=\frac{8}{3}

and hence the area is 649\frac{64}{9}

A Former Brilliant Member - 3 years, 3 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra sorry for 'why' i am not interested in that but what u think about dummy schools because i think one can't get enough time to prepare for olympiads and all from the pulls and pressures of the schools

It is really difficult to answer such questions. Such things are based on school to school , child to child so you really have to decide it yourself.

@Rajdeep Dhingra i actually want to pursue physics as my interest as future career especially to do some sort of research and truly speaking i also want to master mathematics to migrate to higher physics as well as without latter it would be almost impossible to do so .and i know that whatever is in imo is for mathematics and in modern physics or even in classical one demads a nice hold over calculus which is not at all in imo

A Former Brilliant Member - 3 years, 2 months ago

Bhaiya which book would be better for physics halliday resnick and krane,halliday,resnick and walker or university physics by sears and zemansky or physics for scientists and engineers by serway and jewett regarding ipho and for proper understanding
