IOQM Discussion

This discussion is mainly for the Pre-Regional Mathematics Olympiad held in India. However, anyone who wants to practice good Math questions, you are welcome! Also, I'll be mentioning some great teachers, who are known for their excellent problems!

Edit : IOQM instead of PRMO

The rules are:

  • Post problems related to PRMO.

  • Don't post repeated problems(I mean if someone has posted it already, don't post again).

  • You may check out the level of problems from Zakir Husain Sir's A Pre-RMO question (whole series!).

  • Some sample questions can also be found here.

  • Past year problems are also welcome.

  • Don't post comments not related to any problem.

  • Don't write the answers in the comments.

  • If you are not posting a problem yourself, and find a good problem in the Community(old or new), please post it here.

  • If you learnt any new concept, do share it with us!

  • Let's together do Math!

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Here, I learnt a great concept. Do check it out, Holder's Inequality. It is used to solve many PRMO and RMO problems.

A Former Brilliant Member - 9 months, 1 week ago

Yes, but I added wrong, I knew that rule.

Vinayak Srivastava - 9 months, 1 week ago

Extension: Answer should be 33n+333n + 3 runs for nn overs

Mahdi Raza - 9 months, 1 week ago

Oh yes, I forgot, but I once saw a debate, where it was asking if 5 runs is possible or not.

Vinayak Srivastava - 9 months, 1 week ago

@Vinayak Srivastava I don't think so. It shouldn't be allowed. "All exceptions to be avoided" should be written in the question, but I guess it is assumed in the rules of cricket

If that is allowed through (shouldn't be, but anyway), then the total would be

35(n1)+36=35n+135(n-1) + 36 = 35n + 1

Mahdi Raza - 9 months, 1 week ago

@Mahdi Raza And if 5 is allowed, then even 7 should be. That is possibly why 5 is not counted as well

Mahdi Raza - 9 months, 1 week ago

@Vinayak Srivastava I do think it is allowed in cricket. However,it is only possible when fielders are like me or ball is lost .:-P

A Former Brilliant Member - 9 months, 1 week ago

Do you mean 33(n-1)+36 :-)

A Former Brilliant Member - 9 months, 1 week ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Yes, exactly. for each of the first (n1)(n-1) overs, the batsman will take 33 runs. But in the last over he need not change the strike so he can hit all sixes which is 36 runs

Total =33(n1)+36=33n33+36=33n+3\begin{aligned} \text{Total } &= 33(n-1) + 36 \\ &= 33n - 33 + 36 \\ &= \boxed{33n + 3} \end{aligned}

Which is what I wrote above

Mahdi Raza - 9 months, 1 week ago

so you cheated, or referred after getting it wrong? @Siddharth Chakravarty

A Former Brilliant Member - 9 months, 1 week ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Well I referred it before attempting, and then I read a whole wiki on a sport that doesn't interest me, and then got the question correct. I guess it is not cheating, as it is like knowing about a theorem to solve a problem :)

Siddharth Chakravarty - 9 months, 1 week ago

@Siddharth Chakravarty I was only interested in the 'sport that doesn't interest me' part. LOL Finally someone who doesn't think cricket is a big deal. Thanks! Beautiful geometry problems or even problems that have an elegant solution are always a pleasure to solve. Very few problems are being shared in this discussion/page. I expected a lot, but nevermind :(

Can someone please tell me the working in this problem:

If a+b+2c=4,a>0,b>0,c>0a+b+2c=4, a>0,b>0,c>0, then find minimum value of 1a+1b+2c\dfrac{1}{a}+\dfrac{1}{b}+\dfrac{2}{c}

Nice! Thanks! What was the motivation to write it as a+b+c+ca+b+c+c?

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Vinayak Srivastava If u see the harmonic seq u see a 2c\frac{2}{c} so the only ways to make it in the AM was to either use c2\frac{c}{2} or use cc twice but since we don’t know what a+b+c2a+b+\frac{c}{2} I had to use the other one

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Vinayak Srivastava There are some questions you can see and find that you have to use ( if u want to do the question easily ) the QM-AM-GM-HM inequality. Once this set in your head that you have to use it, you will see how to split the variables to get the best results

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez But yeah this comes with some practice

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Yeah, I just recalled that I have used this myself once here. I forget things quite fast! Anyway, thanks for your insight! But I don't think I have practised more than 1 or 2 this kind of problem.

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Vinayak Srivastava There is one last way to find out which I don’t use at all, when minimised all the terms in the expression separately will be equal ( here 1a,1b,1c,1c\frac{1}{a} , \frac{1}{b},\frac{1}{c},\frac{1}{c}), this can be useful for easier direct questions ( like this one ) but not for the ones which involve sums or products of inequalities

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez LOL this is THE method I use most. Maybe I never encountered any hard problems which can't be solved by making all terms equal. :)

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Vinayak Srivastava U could try proving the nesbitt inequality ab+c+bc+a+ca+b\frac{a}{b+c}+ \frac{b}{c+a}+ \frac{c}{a+b} is greater than 32\frac{3}{2} using AM-HM ( there are other ways too, I never found it when I had first tried using AM-HM, I had to resort to rearrangement :) )

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

Very silly of me, but I have missed a four in the first step so the answer is actually 14\frac{1}{4}

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

It should be 4 not 1/4. Also in your solution you wrote it as 1/2c rather 2/c.

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

I think this is a nice problem in community: Generate this!

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

Can someone please explain this?

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

The answer is wrong because if all the coefficients leaving the first one are 0, and the first coefficient is any 3 digit perfect square then the answer is yes. First coefficient is the one with x0{x}^{0}.

Siddharth Chakravarty - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

Yes, I also thought the same. Maybe we should report it.

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

can u provide a proof that polynomial will have to be constant polynomial? I mean if yes, then we are done here. P(x)= a three digit number

And for any value of x,p(x) won't be zero.

@Krity Kamal Hmm so you guys don’t get to crack your head over six questions in three hours.. truly sad

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Yeah, I never gave such a subjective math competition, and I will have to wait 1 more year for it :( But many people much better than me also won't get this opportunity, and I think I am still not capable of studying for it, as I used many hacks and tricks in IOQM, which would be wrong in Subjective. If you have seen Q.19, I assumed the parallelogram as a square and got it right LOL
