Problem Writing Party February 1st - 14th

Hello Brilliant!

Last month's Problem Writing Party was a huge success! So many of you made a contribution one way or another that I couldn't possibly list everyone here. Because of your submissions, we were able to launch not just two new quizzes, but five new quizzes. Here are the quizzes that you all helped create:

New Brilliant Challenge Quizzes
General Polygons: Level 2-3
Number Bases: Level 2
Number Bases: Level 3
Momentum: Level 1-2
Expected Value: Level 2-3

We want to showcase the hard work these members of the community put in over the last week, so Brilliant will featuring these quizzes in the community Featured feed, on Facebook, and in our email campaigns over the next week. With that said, let's kick off the 2nd Problem Writing Party!

How it Works

The party starts right now (February 1st, 2016) and will last for the next two weeks. Throughout the two weeks, we will be focusing on writing awesome problems for the topics listed below. To participate, submit as many problems as you want to these listed topics. At the end of the party, Brilliant staff will be picking the best 5-10 problems for each topic. These problems will then be immortalized and formed into a challenge quiz. If we pick your problem, then you can brag to your friends because it will be displayed on Brilliant forever!

Use this note to

  1. Ask questions about the party or brainstorming ideas from Brilliant staff.

  2. Share links to great relevant problems.

  3. Bounce your ideas off each other to help formulate the best problem you can.

To be selected, problems you submit should be fun and challenging to a student in the levels listed for the given topic.

This Party's Topic Listing

The topics of problem submission for this party are below. Just click the topic you want to contribute to.

Geometry - Volume: Level 1-2
Comparing shapes, rearranging 3D figures, playing with volume formulae. Pictures preferred.

Number Theory - Quadratic Residues: Level 3-4
Legendre Symbol, Law of Quadratic Reciprocity, Problem solving, etc.

Combinatorics - Data Presentation: Level 1-2
Data plots, graphs, charts, and misrepresented data.

Classical Mechanics - Conservation of Energy: Level 2-4
Problems that rely on conserving energy from one state to another.

We didn't receive enough problems in these categories last party, so we're asking for your contributions in them again and we've loosened the constraints so that more submissions come in.

Algebra - Rational Functions: Level 1-3

Calculus - Limits of Sequences: Level 1 and Limits of Functions: Level 1

Computer Science - Complexity/Runtime Analysis: All levels

Happy writing and party on!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Another problem on Volume by me: Open Box Volume

Vignesh Rao - 5 years, 4 months ago

Here is another geometry/volume problem. Perhaps too hard for level 2, but I'll post it anyway:

Cube & Sphere, Sphere & Cube

Arjen Vreugdenhil - 5 years, 4 months ago

Worranat Pakornrat - 5 years, 4 months ago

My third problem.

Cube In A Cube

Lee Care Gene - 5 years, 4 months ago

My second problem, RATIONAL FUNCTION

Too Hard?

Jason Chrysoprase - 5 years, 4 months ago

I like it Jason! This is more Functional Equations. Rational functions deal specifically with a polynomial in the numerator and a polynomial in the denominator, so keep at it.

Thx my Friend

Jason Chrysoprase - 5 years, 4 months ago

This is my new one for Combinatorics-Data Presentation: Roses are red. Violets are blue..

I hope it's not too easy. ;)

Worranat Pakornrat - 5 years, 4 months ago

Why doesn't any one come up with any Computer Science questions.!? :P

Zeeshan Ali - 5 years, 4 months ago

I think because the others is more interesting that Computer Science

Jason Chrysoprase - 5 years, 4 months ago

Well.... I don't think so... there are so many hidden genius people with a brilliant mind of computer science (like me of course :) ) here on brilliant.org :P they just need to come up with some new ideas ..!

Zeeshan Ali - 5 years, 4 months ago

I think because its not known to many people

eg: me

Nihar Mahajan - 5 years, 4 months ago

Same here, idk what is computer science

Jason Chrysoprase - 5 years, 4 months ago

Here are two problems for limits of functions:

How to fix two singularities

Even and odd

(I deleted my laser beam problem. Plus, it kept getting marked as "geometry," even though I assure you that NO geometry is needed to solve it. Oh well; it is kind of messy.)

Jonas Katona - 5 years, 4 months ago

Fun problems! I think one of this will land in a new challenge quiz. ;)

Andrew Ellinor - 5 years, 4 months ago

Thank you! That would be great. :) Here's another limits one that I came up with. It requires just a little more tact: 4, 3, 2, 1, Earth below us

Jonas Katona - 5 years, 4 months ago

That's explain why I can't see ur post anymore

Jason Chrysoprase - 5 years, 4 months ago

Yes; I deleted it. That's maybe why you had trouble with it as well. Try it out now, if you'd like (and my other problems as well :D).

I really liked your problem, btw. I feel like it should be on a quiz.

Jonas Katona - 5 years, 4 months ago

This is the question about Calculus-Limits of Functions: Line, Point, Curve.

Probably too easy, but it's level 1, which we needed. So let's give it a try! ;)

Worranat Pakornrat - 5 years, 4 months ago

Perfect! We need level 1 problems like this. Thanks Dr. Warm.

Andrew Ellinor - 5 years, 4 months ago

The Momentum Challenge Quiz has already been made.

Rajdeep Dhingra - 5 years, 4 months ago

Indeed, Rajdeep is correct. The momentum quiz has already been made. But we can possibly find another home for it!

Andrew Ellinor - 5 years, 4 months ago

I've got another problem: Rational? Real! for rational functions -algebra. Hope you enjoy!

Margaret Zheng - 5 years, 4 months ago

I like it! Definitely a fun problem. We'll probably put it into rational numbers though. Rational functions on the other hand are a polynomial divided by a polynomial, such as

12x25x3,x37x+6x3+6x2+11x+6,3x+6x21\frac{1}{2x^2 - 5x - 3}, \frac{x^3 - 7x + 6}{x^3 + 6x^2 + 11x + 6}, \frac{3x + 6}{x^2 - 1}

Fun, right? We'll find a home for this one somewhere. I definitely like Milky and Tricky!

Andrew Ellinor - 5 years, 4 months ago

I have just posted my very first calculus problem: Where does it go? It is an easy but great concept for the beginners (like me).

Margaret Zheng - 5 years, 4 months ago

I am submitting this set of problems for the party :)

My Problems

Pranshu Gaba - 5 years, 4 months ago

@Andrew Ellinor

I just want to ask, why geometry only volume.

I got some difficult geometry but it's 2D

Why must 3D, you said you didn't receive enough problem

Jason Chrysoprase - 5 years, 4 months ago

This is my new question about Geometry-Volume: Crystal in a Cube

Enjoy! ;)

Worranat Pakornrat - 5 years, 4 months ago

A new one on Geometry-Volume again: Crystal Clear.

Worranat Pakornrat - 5 years, 4 months ago
