Proofathon Spring Competition is OUT NOW!

Hi everyone,

Spring is here, which means Proofathon has just posted the problem set for the Spring Competition!

The contest lasts 10 days, from 2/27/2015 to 3/8/2015. Be sure to log in or sign up at the Proofathon Website, do as many problems as you can, and submit your solutions to [email protected]!

(PRO TIP: If you don't know how or don't have the resources to create a PDF with your solutions, here is an easy way: type up your solutions on Microsoft Word instead, and click the arrow next to Save As, and click PDF or XPS.)

Good luck to everyone!

~Daniel, Assistant Manager @ Proofathon

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

@Daniel Liu Could you confirm if it's af(a+b+c)+f(bc) af(a+b+c) + f(bc) in Q3?

Because it seems like it should be bf(a+b+c)+f(ac) bf(a+b+c) + f(ac) and also because the current question is solvable in like 2 lines.

I don't think it's even solvable as is.

Jake Lai - 6 years, 3 months ago

Your dispute is valid. We will edit it ASAP (only @Cody Johnson can edit the PDF)

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 3 months ago

The problem should be fixed now; the error came from a typo. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 3 months ago

But the date in pdf says it will run till 7th December'2015

LOL, that's (most probably) a typo. Cody quickly set up the PDF well past midnight, it was a long night for us yesterday. I'll ask him to fix it, and also add the names of the contributors.

@Daniel Liu Nice set of questions :)

How is the winner determined ?

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Did you register :D

Winner is determined by people with highest score. We grade the solutions on a scale of 0-7.

@Daniel Liu Yes I did !

But I don't think that I will be able to spare time to mail the solutions to you mainly due to the immense amount of time that I'll have to spare just in typing out the solution . Sorry about that , but I'll be a regular from the upcoming contests onwards :)

The reason for me not taking part is that I have my Board Exams(my National Examination) and JEE coming up .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Daniel Liu I am not participating this time, and maybe next ones also. I'll be regular after 24th May. I can spare 12 hours daily in June. =P

Can you brief me about this contest? You see I joined Brilliant just in December so I guess I don't know many things that happen around here .

Thanks :)

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

I think i want to participate in this contest. But, is there any prize for the winner? I mean, some kind of book or whatever it is.

Top 3 get T-shirts and top 1 get Mathematica for 1 year I think. I don't really remember though.
