This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

@David Lee Never mind then Daniel your little brother sucks at math. Better? :D

Finn Hulse - 6 years, 11 months ago

Why does this have so many upvotes

David Lee - 6 years, 11 months ago

btw i edited it and took out the "0"

David Lee - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Daniel Liu , I wanted a clarification regarding question 3 wherein it is asked to obtain the two functions. On integrating, I get some unknown, arbitrary constants for which there isn't any condition to obtain their specific values. So how should I give the answer?

Thanks in advance.

Sudeep Salgia - 6 years, 11 months ago

You may find a specific pair of functions, or a family of possible functions. I'm not sure, since I didn't make the problem, but I think that is what you have to do.

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 11 months ago

This is standard in maths competitions, especially in differential (functional) equations. You should say "for some arbitrary constants [blah blah blah...]"

Hope this helps! :)

Cody Johnson - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Daniel Liu hI Daniel i have actually never participated in this contest but how good should you be to participate in this contest?

Mardokay Mosazghi - 6 years, 11 months ago

It doesn't matter! You can still just do the competition for fun. So you have nothing to lose; just join!

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, you can easily pick off 1 or 2 problems without any Calculus knowledge! \Tiny[deleted by moderator]\Tiny \text{[deleted by moderator]}

@Finn Hulse why does it say deleted by a moderator

@Mardokay Mosazghi I do not know.

Finn Hulse - 6 years, 11 months ago

In problem 6, do we have an independence assumption of having that property ?

Abhishek Sinha - 6 years, 11 months ago

Yes.

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 11 months ago

Please incorporate that into the problem statement.

Abhishek Sinha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Abhishek Sinha Cody replies that it's implied in the problem statement.

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Daniel Liu No. The problem only specifies the marginals. There could be potentially many joint distributions that have the same marginals.

Abhishek Sinha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Abhishek Sinha I'm sorry, if you really have an issue with this contact @Cody Johnson about it. He's the one who can edit. I can't really do anything about it :/

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Abhishek Sinha Okay, I'll incorporate it into the problem statement.

Cody Johnson - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Abhishek Sinha That problem bugs me. \Tiny[Deleted, No hints please!]\Tiny \text{[Deleted, No hints please!]} but it gave me an obvious and stupid answer. :P

Finn Hulse - 6 years, 11 months ago

How did the competition go, everybody?

Cody Johnson - 6 years, 11 months ago

does anyone know why can't I sign up for the Proofathon account? I always encounter error 404 page after clicking sign up button

Ahaan, this is a forum for Proofathoners to connect. I think you should be lenient with your moderation. Off-topic comments should be fine.
