it says universe expands and contracts after every 8* 10^9 years......... right now universe is expanding...... please clarify what does this expanding and contracting of universe means....?

thanks in advance

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

This pulsating theory is accepted by some people. It says that the universe started with something called singularity, an entity with infinite density but zero volume. Then an explosion took place called the big bang. After the big bang that entity expanded and matter began to form. It expanded. Expansion means that every object began to go away and away from each other which is still going on. The theory further states that something called the big crunch will happen after which the universe will again go back to singularity. I am no expert in this subject but I wrote whatever I knew about the subject.

arey no problem.....i respect ur knowledge...:)

but i am still confused does this expansion means that expansion which we study for solid objects...or what...?

I found a good article that might help you. Here \href{http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/universe.html}{Here} it is.

have you ever think about Theory of Everything.

it's like a massive junk for me in Wikipedia because very hard to understand. so, I use my own theory that maybe like that theory.

"everything in the universe are undefined. human just limit it to simplify communication process with other human." by: me (YIS)

ok, let's jump to expanding universe and contracting universe.

have you ever believe that everything can influence everything? yup, very clear, like the gravitation. there is one thing that has one thing, so, there is one thing that has the greatest gravitational force.

an empty space actually like an empty space, the universe expanding because the Big Bang energy still pushing everything in universe.

think about the one that has the greatest gravitational force. the expanding of the universe will be stop because they pulled little by little with that gravitational force.

it mean the universe will stop expanding and then automatically contracting.

still don't understand?

I am not an academic but this theory makes sense. Everything is pulsating, at different speed but pulsating, my heart at 90 per minute, my city at 8 hours per day.
