PUZZLES TO PUZZLE YOU

  1. The Waiter

Three men in a cafe order a meal the total cost of which is $15. They each contribute $5. The waiter takes the money to the chef who recognizes the three as friends and asks the waiter to return $5 to the men.

The waiter is not only poor at mathematics but dishonest and instead of going to the trouble of splitting the $5 between the three he simply gives them $1 each and pockets the remaining $2 for himself.

Now, each of the men effectively paid $4, the total paid is therefore $12. Add the $2 in the waiters pocket and this comes to $14.....where has the other $1 gone from the original $15?

  1. How can you add eight 8's to get the number 1,000? (only use addition).

3.Two Fathers and Two Sons Riddle

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

  1. In an exchange of money it is senseless to add the payment and the money received, i.e we cannot add the money 12 paid by the three people to the money received by by the waiter 2 to obtain the net sum . Hence the money paid by the three friends(15-3) = the money received (10 by owner + 2 by waiter ) . Hence justified . The other two have already been solved. :)

For the first one, the trick is you're not supposed to add it up to $15 which is the original price, you're supposed to subtract it to 10, which is the new price. So basically, each person paid $4, which comes in $12, and the waiter got $2. $12 - $2 is $10, which is the real price, and therefore, no money lost. The other two are already explained by many people :).
