Pythagorean Theorem

The Pythagorean Theorem states that if a triangle has one right angle, the longest side (called the hypotenuse) has the property that the square of its length is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the two legs.

This is frequently written: $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$ .

The converse is also true, so we can see that a triangle with side lengths $3, 4$ , and $5$ , will be a right triangle, since $3^2 + 4^2 = 5^2$ .
