  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Nice and very simple quiz

10/1010/10 for the interesting thought for making the question

@Zakir Husain Nice quiz! Can you tell me how to solve the second last one? Rest of them felt like I have seen them somewhere in Physics, even though I haven't learnt them in math! Especially the last one, it reminded me directly of equation of a wave. Guessed a few by elimination.

Vinayak Srivastava - 4 months, 1 week ago

@Vinayak Srivastava Solution of second last one (with standard notations) : bn+1=bn(1an)b_{n+1}=b_n(\frac{1}{a}-n) =bn1(1a(n1))(1an)=b_{n-1}(\frac{1}{a}-(n-1))(\frac{1}{a}-n) =(1an)(1a(n1))...(1a1)1a=k=0n(1ak)=(\frac{1}{a}-n)(\frac{1}{a}-(n-1))...(\frac{1}{a}-1)\frac{1}{a}=\prod_{k=0}^{n}(\frac{1}{a}-k) bn+1=k=0n(1ak)\Rightarrow b_{n+1}=\prod_{k=0}^{n}(\frac{1}{a}-k) bn=k=0n1(1ak)\therefore b_{n}=\prod_{k=0}^{n-1}(\frac{1}{a}-k) bnan=ank=0n1(1ak)\Rightarrow b_na^n=a^n\prod_{k=0}^{n-1}(\frac{1}{a}-k) =k=0n1a(1ak)=\prod_{k=0}^{n-1}a(\frac{1}{a}-k) =k=0n1(1ak)=\prod_{k=0}^{n-1}(1-ak) lima0bnan=lima0k=0n1(1ak)\therefore\lim_{a\to 0} b_na^n=\lim_{a\to 0} \prod_{k=0}^{n-1}(1-ak) =k=0n1lima0(1ak)=k=0n11=1=\prod_{k=0}^{n-1}\lim_{a\to 0}(1-ak)=\prod_{k=0}^{n-1}1=1 lima0bnan=1\therefore\lim_{a\to 0}b_na^n=1 lima0bnann!=1n!\therefore \red{\lim_{a\to 0}\frac{b_na^n}{n!}}=\frac{1}{n!} lima0n=0bnann!=n=0lima0bnann!\lim_{a\to 0}\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{b_na^n}{n!}=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\red{\lim_{a\to 0}\frac{b_na^n}{n!}} =n=01n!=e=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n!}=e

Yajat Shamji - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

What about my Recurring Proof Notes? You think they are useful to your note, @Jeff Giff?

Yajat Shamji - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jeff Giff- Try my A Pre-RMO question! series, Math also Fails! series.

Zakir Husain - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

That's a definite one for @Jeff Giff to try - the Pre-RMO questions.

Also, RMO stands for...?

Yajat Shamji - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

By the way, try this for Math Also Fails - eiπ=1,(eπ)i=1,e^{i\pi} =-1, (e^\pi)^i =-1, then i=logeπ1?!i=\log_{e^\pi} -1?!

Jeff Giff - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

No actually, definition of log clearly states that logablog_ab is defined only when

  • a>0anda1a \gt 0 and a \neq 1

  • b>0b \gt 0

Aryan Sanghi - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Well it is correct, and not surprising if you know the Taylor series of ln\ln and this

Zakir Husain - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

If you want a big and detailed explanation you can ask for that (can even write a note!)

Zakir Husain - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Oops.. that’s logarithm for negative numbers :/

Jeff Giff - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Good idea! I’ll add them :)

Jeff Giff - 11 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jeff Giff, Thanks for the mention for my LaTeX\LaTeX{} Guide but, it is a work in progress and I can suggest you better ones - Daniel Liu's Guide and Hamza Anushath's Guide.

Wowie!!!!!! RadMaths has become even better! Good work @Jeff Giff! You'll have to organize it a bit though, like removing the Mathathon as it is over, adding more space between 2 different series, etc.

Hey everyone! I just found a way to nest buttons!!! All we have to do is to quote in a button and make a button in the quote! Only we can’t nest tables :( @Frisk Dreemurr , @Yajat Shamji

How did you make it, I can create the nested button but can’t hide stuff in it

Jason Gomez - 3 months, 2 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Oh I forgot! You have to put the nested button frame behind the last button instead of in it :P I found that by accident actually and it turns out you can’t put line breaks though :)

Jeff Giff - 3 months, 2 weeks ago

Is it okay if I remake this note to make it more... accessible? I will give credit + link to this note as well if you do

Frisk Dreemurr - 3 months, 3 weeks ago

Ok :) but a better way would be to link this note in the daily problem solutions :) or would you just want the code for this note?

Jeff Giff - 3 months, 2 weeks ago

You see, num IC has accessed this note from my daily solution :)
