Ratings instead of points

I'm quite pleased with the new ratings system,however i wanted to ask that what is the reason behind making it private? Also I wanted to suggest that having the rating displayed on a persons profile rather than the points gives it a more 'exciting'' feel as we have in top coder.Similarly we can also have the concept of 'going Red'(again Top Coder) which provides a indication that the person is exceptionally gifted in presence of gifted people. Thus could help in College applications or recruitment in companies.
