Recruit new friends to enable.

I do not like things like this, because for us avid-math solvers who do not have friends, we will be unable to complete such problems. Us antisocial people will be greatly appreciative if you would remove said feature, or suggest methods on finding friends. Thank you.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Some of you are displeased by having the number of problems available to you limited by the number of additional people you bring to the site. We want to build the world’s largest community of problem solvers on Brilliant, and have worked hard to create a great website, and challenging problems for you. In return, we’re asking you to help us grow, and for that we are offering even more free problems.

The amount of material available for free on Brilliant is staggering. It is surprising to us that the reaction to hundreds of new free problems has been anger that there are hundreds more problems that require unlocking.

In the future, there will be more ways besides Facebook invites for you to give back to Brilliant in order to gain access to more features on the site. The Techniques section is still under development, but we wanted to release what we had so far and see if people found it valuable. The alternative would have been to launch the new Techniques section many more weeks or months in the future.

These days I see a lot of ads of brilliant around, even on Facebook. I got to know of brilliant from an ad on youtube and was here immediately. I am pretty sure that if I can see these ads, my friends on facebook can too. Brilliant is an amazing place for math lovers and people who want to improve. The launching of the techniques trainer was indeed a really great step. You are providing the world stuff which would otherwise cost money as subscription fee on other websites, we are grateful to you for that. We certainly want to help Brilliant expand. But facebook invites isn't a very good idea. Inviting in people with no interest can be a bad step. It can bring in unmotivated people who may cheat or troll if we send in invites without thinking. Not all of us have friends who love maths. I think the advertisements that you are putting up are good enough. Maybe you should try putting up ads on diverse platforms. You can try localizing your advertisements- like advertisements on other country-specific advertisement platforms while continuing with facebook and google advertisements. Brilliant is doing a great job. I also have a technical suggestion to offer. Currently I can access just three problems on the technique trainer. It would be awesome if the interface of the trainer was such that many problems 'of a similar kind' would appear one after another allowing one to solve a 'streak' of problems Like for example a quadratic equation appears on the screen, I need more practice on quadratic equations, so I click on a button 'More Practice' and viola I am now solving a streak of quadratic equations, the difference between subsequent problems being only that the values get changed so that I get more practice for problems of a particular kind instantly.

Maybe an alternative could be that inviting our friends could fetch us some points!! That would be really tempting and an awesome opportunity for users to gain points and also Brilliant would grow a lot....

I personally sort of dislike it but I do understand where it's going. My sister has been asking about brilliant but is also too lazy to figure out what it is, so this sort of allowed me to connect with her somewhat.

But I do wish that Facebook wasn't the only way. And I do wish that friends weren't necessary to unlock more problems.

And finally if we are going to continue this idea of recruitment, have a feature to see which friends have joined.

I think that in the same way that many Facebook users ignore game requests, they might also ignore requests to join Brilliant. For those who played games on Facebook, they would know the system of sending requests to friends in exchange for virtual prizes. People who receive such requests might become annoyed, especially when they think that those who send them requests do so only because they want the prize, as opposed to genuinely trying to share something interesting to others. The same logic probably applies to all requests, even those coming from Brilliant.

I'm not saying that those who send requests do not care genuinely. It's just that the intentions of the sender may be lost to the recipient, and thus the receiver may just ignore the request, thinking that the sender is doing this only to gain something.

As a possible alternative, I suggest that Brilliant not make recruitment a requisite for receiving more problems to solve. Instead, Brilliant should encourage users to recruit on their own, without additional benefits. The few who will be willing to recruit will be doing so because they love the website and they want to spread the word to others. People will be more willing to listen to passionate individuals than to people who only recruit to be able to access more content.

Of course, these are just my opinions.

Never mind,found it...I don't think its a good idea to try to get people who are generally thought to be introverts,to break out of their shell.That is not why they came to the website. If its to get more people to join the website its already cool enough without this feature,other problem solving websites(ie Project Euler) have got hundreds and thousands of users without the use of facebook. I really like the new features,but I think this part is a bit unnecessary.I mean the idea of inviting friends is a good idea but users shouldn't be denied problems if they cant..
