Reducing the rating is not a good idea

Dear Staff Members of Brilliant

This is my view that instead of reducing down the ratings for every wrong answer you can reduce the point offered, because it makes some people neglect questions of higher rating ie. 2000-2500 as if they attempt and make a mistake there is a point deduction of 10-20 ratings which can be revived only if we try and answer harder question then our level.The other thing is that you should increase the number of attempts for those questions whose solutions are still not displayed.

My last suggestion is that you may try to allow people to rate their problem (in the EXPLORE area)but i know people may rate their problem high even if it is some simple problem which is not right so you may allow users to rate only after a certain level (mostly level-5)

Hope you will take in consideration of my suggestion.

I would disagree with not reducing ratings at all. Ratings are an indication of your ability in the topic, and provides you with a way to gauge which problems to work on. Your ability will change over time, from lack of practice, being less lucky, etc.

We do not want people to rise in level from just doing all of the level 1 problems. This is akin to saying that "I repeated Year 6 6 times, so I should now be in Year 12". There could be an argument that this person would be Year 8, but it is unlikely to be much higher.
For harder problems (relative to your level), the reward is much greater, and the penalty is much lower. If a Year 6 person gets a year 12 problem right, there would be an aggressive change. Similarly, if a Year 12 person gets a Year 6 problem wrong, we would question if he deserves to be in Year 12.

I do not see how increasing the number of attempts for questions without solutions is relevant, since solutions are constantly being added. I much prefer the simplicity of 3 attempts per (numerical) problem.

Regarding: ratings doing funny things, (especially when you have a high rating) yes, we agree that it needs some adjustment. Changes are coming this week (although they will be subtle at first).
Regarding letting people set topics and ratings for their problems: also launching this coming week :D

Still debating about already-created problems.
No, it will apply to all problems. The problems will not affect the ratings of others until a certain threshold of attempters is reached (so that the system is confident that the problem has a trustworthy rating.)

My number theory rating was 2263and I gave a wrong answer and it shot down to 2232..it feels like being stabbed in the chest lol...

YES!! People need to be encouraged to find harder problems, not be afraid that their ratings will go down by 500 points!!

Whilst its annoying to have a massive drop in rating if you get a lower level question wrong, there does need to be some drop or surely if ratings can only ever go up everyone would just eventually end up being level 5!...which would completely defeat the point of a rating :P
