RISHABHSRISHABH'S problem

this you can say as math magic trick .

here is the problem : ask the viewer to think of a 4 digit or more digit number (without showing it to you say 986568) ask the viewer to do sum of the digits ,then it becomes 42 (considering above number) subtract this difference from main number ,that becomes 986526 now i say that cut any digit from this new number , say 2 then the number left is 98656 then ask the viewer to show the result i.e. 98656 now you look at the result suddenly you answer that the digit you removed is 2 the trick is that you do sum of the digits that is 34 it is near a multiple of 9 i.e. 36 and difference between the two is 2 and you say the answer 2 what is the reason behind this trick!!!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

This is because difference between a number and the sum of its digits is always a multiple of 9 and we know all the digits except one so we can easily find it by subtracting the digit sum from nearest greater multiple of 9.
