RMO/JSTSE = Big headache.

How To prepare For RMO/JSTSE?

Ok, I'll be going to FIITJEE from April onwards. I think they will prepare me for the RMO/JSTSE but I don't think that I will be able to crack it until I prepare for it Myself.

So, Anyone who can suggest some good books to refer?

For JSTSE, I think that the level for Mathematics is like the class 10 NCERT level. So that shouldn't be much of a problem. For the Science part, I would like some books to refer. For the RMO, So far I am not able to understand any question from the past years papers that I have seen. So some basics ?

I'm Presently doing the Class 10/Class 11 NCERT.

I do understand that many of you would like me to refer to Internet Sources but I can not sit on the computer for much time.

So, Kindly Suggest sources for these competitions OR please tell me the difficulty level of the Problems in these competitions so that I can get some good sources from my seniors.

Thanks to everyone!!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Well , if you are practicing from Class 11 NCERT , make sure that you try out the Miscellaneous Questions . The rest is just too easy , so don't waste your time on Exercises .

Also don't try asking for a new set of books for each exam that you are going to appear . Try referring to a specific set of good books (on all subjects) and start to build your basics in all topics from now onwards!

And btw , you can always ask @Rajdeep Dhingra , @Krishna Ar , @Anik Mandal since they are in your age group .

For RMO , Challenge And Thrill of Pre College Mathematics is the best. The treatment of RMO topics is exhaustive and sufficient .Both the theory and problems are awesome.

Is that book sufficient? If so Then THANKS SO MUCH!!

Mehul Arora - 6 years, 2 months ago

This book is more than sufficient for RMO. The book is till INMO.

I am too aiming at the same thing and and believe me after doing a handful of problems from this book the questions of RMO seem too easy especially geometry and inequalities in algebra .I am talking about those because I have done only those.

Raven Herd - 6 years, 2 months ago

Problem: How To prepare For RMO/JSTSE? (assuming you are talking about JTST) Assuming that the question is meaningful, (we are going to disprove it by method of contradiction) Case 1: You are not in class 11 Then you must not be worried about JTST since you can only appear for it in class 11. So in this case the question is meaningless. Case 2: You are in class 11 (and have not got INMO merit in class 10) SInce you care to ask this question, you must be aware that JTST and pre RMO exams are conducted on the same date so you may appear in only one and not both. So you sit for JTST you may not appear for RMO. So even in this case the question is meaningless. Case 3: You are in class 11 (and have got INMO merit in class 10) Since you have already got to the merit list the previous year you may directly appear for INMO.. You may happily appear for JTST. So even in this case the question is meaningless.

Inference: The initial assumption was mathematically wrong. Hence Proved: You must be concerned about preparing for either one of them and not both.

(BTW this is how u write a proof by contradiction in RMO)

I do not know much about the preparation of JSTSE but I can help you with RMO For Geometry follow

  • Plane Trigonometry and Co-ordinate Geometry by S. L. Loney

  • Challenge and Thrill of Pre-CollegeMathematics(The geometry part of the book is best according to me) by V. Krishnamurthy, C. R. Pranesachar, K. N. Ranganathan, and B. J. Venkatachala

For Number Theory follow

  • Elementary Number Theory by David Burton

For Combinatorics follow

  • Principles and Techniques in Combinatorics by Chen Chuan Chong ,Koh Khee Meng

And generally follow the book Problem-Solving Strategies by Arthur Engel And you can RMO papers as preparation .

Umm, I have recently ordered the Book "Hall and Knight" and I will be studying from that.

P.S. I think that once I finish with this book, I will be in a positionTo solve questions from these books.

Just Curious:- Did you qualify the RMO?

@A Former Brilliant Member Its okay. I am not a student of CBSE/ICSE I think this was your main reason for getting confused.
