This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

An Iq test is supposed to measure the abstract reasoning of a person. The questions are not designed to be practiced. This would not give you a correct score on the IQ test.

I just read this really interesting article about a study that says that IQ plays no role in determining how well a person will learn math. People with high IQ's, as children start out better at math, but only the motivated become good at new math.

I have never taken an IQ test. I don't know what they are like. Has anybody on Brilliant taken an IQ test? Are they fun?

Grace Doughty - 8 years, 5 months ago

Haven't taken one either, they seem dumb

Tim Ye - 8 years, 5 months ago

I have taken IQ tests, and in the long run, taking them can get boring. That's because most IQ tests have the same format and type of questions: analogies, recognizing patterns, and verbal & numerical reasoning.

If IQ questions will be asked on Brilliant, I'll be glad if they do not sound like the usual IQ test q's. The more out-of-the-box thinking they require, the better ;)

It has been recently shown by research, that achievements in Math. may not necessary depend only on the student's IQ, but on his motivation and the teaching method. So make your minds after reading the next article In Scien. Am.

Motivation and good studying strategies, not IQ, predict the growth in math abilities, a new study shows

Intelligent people learn faster hence making them relatively better. But I can honestly say ever since I began doing competitive mathematics I have become more intelligent. I could say my evidence is being able to solve Mensa problems quite easily without much strain much better than I previously could.

Hmmm... I am not sure if your IQ can increase by more than 5 points... Maybe your way actually DOES increase iq...

Raakin Kabir - 4 years, 9 months ago

Philosophically thinking, I don't believe intelligence is an objective attribute (such as length, time, weight), or even a relative attribute (such as beauty, justice). So I don't think that trying to measure it makes sense. As far as I know, IQ tests are simple questions (3,2,5,4,7,6,... which is the next number?), or strange questions (bees are to backpacks as planets are to...).

However, I'm the kind of person who would rather have a 5/10 trying to solve three hard problems than a 9/10 solving 100 easy problems, so personally I dislike IQ tests.

And a happy new year to all.
