This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Actually, in mathematics the division by zero is meaningless.

0*infinity is one of the indeterminate forms in mathematics

Snehdeep Arora - 8 years, 2 months ago

infinity is undetermined quantity

Advitiya Brijesh - 8 years, 2 months ago

well, i think it doesn't work like that, since every number divided by zero is infinite, then infinity multipled by zero should be undefinited, just like zero divided by zero, cause it has so many answers, sorry for my bad english

Why doesn't it work like that? Infinity is some number right, so zero multiplied by anything is zero right?

infinity is not a number

Tan Li Xuan - 8 years, 2 months ago

Yes,infinity is a concept not a defined number..Assuming it is will lead to specious results like the one above.

Thaddeus Abiy - 8 years, 2 months ago

infinity is not a number! because it's value is not fixed ..it's value is not defined

Snehdeep Arora - 8 years, 2 months ago

In chapter limits 0 \times ∞ is an indeterminate quantity......i.e. the value cannot be determined.if we'll try to check lets consider a number is very very small infact tending to '0', when is multiplied with an infinite quantity can give a meaningless number since we do not know the exact vale of '∞ ' .

And whenever we multiply 0 with a finite quantity then the answer is zero,not when we multiply it with ∞

A Former Brilliant Member - 8 years, 1 month ago

any number if it is brought to the form '0/0' or ;Infinity/Infinity' is indeterminate. so 0xInfinity =0/0 (since' Infinity =1/0') is also indeterminate(dosn't exist.

You can't simply convert x/0 = inf into x = 0 * inf :

When you turn a/b = c into a = b * c you're actually multiplying both sides by b . See what happens if you attempt to do so when b = 0 :

a/0 = c <=> 0 * a/0 = 0 * c <=> a * 0/0 = 0 * c

Given that 0/0 is undefined, you can't get from a * 0/0 = 0 * c to a = 0 * c , as that would be assuming 0/0 = 1 . Here's what happens in your situation:

x/0 = inf <=> 0 * x/0 = 0 * inf <=> x * 0/0 = 0 * inf

x * 0/0 , or simply 0/0 , is undefined, and so is 0 * inf , so nothing can be done here.

which equals to 0/0 it's indeterminate form mean does'nt exist
