Singapore Mathematical Olympiad 2014

Today was the day of the SMO 2014 Junior and Senior Category Round 1. (Tomorrow's Open Category!) Round 2 will be held on 28 June and 5 July for the Round 2 competition. Junior and Senior are for 14 and below and 15-16 year olds respectively. Open is for all who are 18 and below.

(I will try to keep this note brief.) The SMO consists of 2 rounds, a short answer round (Round 1: 35 questions, each worth a mark) and a long answer round (Round 2; working's also graded in this 5 question, 50 mark paper).

The full mark is 85 (I trust everyone can do their addition ;D) and to get into the top 30 in Singapore you normally only need about 40-50 marks.

The point of this note, however, is just to wish everyone in Singapore all the best (@Victor Loh @Charlton Teo @Cedric Tan @Wang Jianzhi @Happy Melodies @Yuxuan Seah @Joshua Ong and others, of course) and hope you do your best! :D Good luck!

P.S. Sorry that this note was 1 day late XD

P.P.S. YAY! This is the first note I've ever written!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

:) I didn't do well for Junior (so many careless mistakes; only got 20) but ok for Open though...:P

Yay! :)

How was SMO @Yuxuan Seah ?? Did you take part in Open??? I managed to solve 23 questions (no time because I reserved some time for checking) for Senior (with 1 careless now) and 15 questions for Open...

I did 29 questions for Junior but I got 7 wrong! So I just got 22/35 for Junior. Gj for senior though! For open I did around 15 but I'm not too sure of 4 of them. That makes 11. But 15 questions is good :D Great job overall! :) (I'm only Sec 1)

@Joshua Ong I probably can get at least a silver cos I suck... What's the 2nd round criteria?

@Joshua Ong For what Junior? Cut-off score should be around 15-20, I don't think it will be more than 20 seriously.
