This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I have looked into your ratings stored in our backend, and they are correct. Your rating in Geometry went up by 15 points after you solved the "Egyptian model Building" problem. This is the last problem in Geometry that you have worked on. Your rating in Geometry is also at the highest it has been since.

I will look into why it displayed that your ratings dropped 100 points. Can you provide more information about what exactly happened?

THE RATING DROPPED WHEN I SOLVED SELF SIMILAR CIRCUITS BY 120 POINTS WHEN I GAVE A WRONG ANSWER (IS IT POSSIBLE BECAUSE I ATTEMPTED A 2500 POINTS PROBLEM AND GAVE A WRONG ANSWER) BUT AFTER IT I GAVE THE CORRECT ANSWER IN MY SECOND TRY AND WISHED MY RATING TO INCREASE TREMENDOUSLY BUT ONLY GOT 20-30 POINTS---->dissapointed BECAUSE BEING IN LEVEL 2 AND SOLVING A PROBLEM OF LEVEL 5 SHOULD BENEFIT ME RATHER THAN DISSAPOINT.../(........................................../)

Your rating changed by -1 when you answered the self similar circuits problem wrongly twice (wrong answers of 1.207, 0.8535). As you mentioned, as it was rated substantially above your level, and you were unlikely to solve it, so we do not penalize you too significantly.

When you got it correct in your third try, we did not award much points as it was an indication of guessing. If you had answered correctly on your first try, you would have gotten a significant increase.

I am concerned that you feel that your ratings dropped by 120 points. Can you describe what you did? Are you aware that you have different ratings in each topic? Perhaps you were looking at ratings on another page pertaining to a different topic?

@Calvin Lin but i solved it perfectly ----------->(edited out) right answer upto 5 significant digits i must get my points for it as i did some calculation error in first 2 attempts as u see they are approx same

@Anirudha Nayak I did say that you solved it correctly, though it was in your third try, as opposed to "I GAVE THE CORRECT ANSWER IN MY SECOND TRY". I stated your two wrong answers, to remind you that it was in your third try. I didn't want to state the correct answer (so that others can work on it), and have edited it out from your reply.

I stated that your ratings barely decreased initially, and actually increased after you solved it. I am concerned that you didn't feel see that, as it indicates that there is something wrong with the display of your values. I will try and look into that, and if you can provide any more details, that will be very helpful.

@Calvin Lin what help can i do

@Anirudha Nayak Can you think, is there any reason why you felt that your rating has dropped? Is there anything which you did differently?

For example, I see that your Mechanics rating is about 120 more than your Electricity and Magnetism rating. Is it possible that you were comparing it to your Mechanics ratings (after working on Cones are sweaty spheres)?

@Calvin Lin i dont think so,,, i like to highlight one thng that sometimes it happens so that my rating start from a lower value for instance if i have a rating of 1769 points and give a right answer the rating points increase from 1500 to 1785 (this is just an example) so i think when i gave the wrong answer it must have done the same and i thought it reduced by 1000 i recommend that you check my ratings in electromagnetism again to be sure...... SORRY FOR THE "TROUBLE"

@Anirudha Nayak Your rating changes look valid to me.

I think I have identified a possible error. In your case, you have a rating in the topic "User submitted pending", and hence you see a (false) rating. When the problem is subsequently moved to the actual topic, if your displayed rating doesn't update to the corresponding topic, then you would likely see huge unexplained changes.

I'd see what I can do to resolve this.
