Strange things are happening! Strange things...

Is it just me, or are strange thing happening to you guys too?

Just found that one of my questions was edited and it's name changed, without informing me.

Also, Photos are being uploaded to some of my questions. How is this even happening?

Posting tags on problems and notes is impossible! It takes forever to load, look at all the recent questions! They have only one tag due to this reason!

Please shed some light on this! Also reshare, so that we can inform more people!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

  1. We work on improving problems, by rephrasing it for clarity, adding a relevant image, and making the title suitable, Latex-ing equations, etc. This tends to happen for problems that are beginning to get popular, and we want to increase the likelihood that people will interact with it. So, in general, take it as a good sign.
If you disagree with the changes (like you think that the geometric image makes the problem too easy), then you can ping me and we can discuss it.

  2. Of course, we also remove crap. For example, if the title is "WHAT IS THIS????!?!?!?!?!?!?", it will likely be changed to "What is this?". Likewise, if the image is unsuitable, then it will be removed.

  3. Yes, we are aware that posting tags is currently an issue. We will look into fixing this. Update: This issue has been fixed.

I understand that you make very important edits to the problem when it is badly phrased/incorrect. Also, being a rookie in latex myself, I really appreciate the latex edits that you guys make to fix this. I have no problems with this.

I think you may be familiar with the "emotional attachment" that a person can have to a problem created by him/her. It does exist. When you create something from scratch, I think you are entitled to a say in what's done with it, at least as far as names are concerned. I made all my problems myself and spent time thinking about what to name them and I think people changing them without consent is unwarranted. The person who edited it should have had the courtesy to inform me that some changes had been made. I was shocked to see "Power of sine!" changed to "The Power of Sine is in your hands!". While it may be appealing to some, to me it is not.

Thank you for patiently listening to my opinion and replying to them.

There was also one more error, which i think has been fixed. "_LATEXPROCESSOR something "had been coming up in a lot of places.

Staff members and moderators have the ability to edit any problem or note to make it better. One of them must have edited it.

But changing the name of MY problem? I think that is a bit too much freedom! Understood that moderators are important and carry out a lot of duties, but this was near vandalism!

Raghav Vaidyanathan - 6 years, 3 months ago

That's not strange, moderators do upload images to make a question more interesting that's not being done automatically.

Ronak Agarwal - 6 years, 3 months ago

This happened with me too(name changed, photo uploaded etc...) , but i found that it was edited by @Calvin Lin Sir, as the question missed some data...

Kislay Raj - 6 years, 3 months ago

Actually this is good thing , Since this make problems and notes more interesting and Popular, But I have one issue that we all moderator's should be careful about changing answer type , I mean when some problem asked that report answer as " it's Floor Value or enter it's Ceiling Value " , then we should not changed it as " Report answer to nearest integer " without knowing actual answer etc. , Since this step make problem answer incorrect. I noticed this 3-4 times in my problem , and i think it may be also happened in some other problem or may be not , But I think we all should take care about it , and @Calvin Lin Sir what do you say about this situation?

Deepanshu Gupta - 6 years, 3 months ago

I am not aware that we change it from floor / ceiling function to "nearest integer". I believe we would have left it as is.

Can you link me to some problems as an example?

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

sorry sir, i have not yet proper evidence yet and those all Problems are corrected now, but as I thought that I should tell You about that so I tell it to you. I think you should tell about all moderators about that , and take care of them. Recently few day's back I posted an physics question "Electric Mushroom" in which I initially ask to find floor value of answer , but next day I found that it rephrased as "round to nearest integer value" , But I did not tell You Because actually answer was wrong due to my wrong calculation of an double Integration needed in that problem , Ronak disput that problem and we together make it correct , So I reposted that problem and I also left to answer as " nearest integer " to avoid any mistake .

@Deepanshu Gupta Oh certainly! If you feel that any changes are unwarranted, ping me.

I remember specifically your "Electric Mushroom" problem from 1-2 days back. We were doing our best to understand what you were trying to say, and fixing it, so we were making several changes and discussing how to improve it. I later see that You / Ronak were starting to edit the problem, so we stopped. Eventually, you deleted it and reposted the improved version, so that's fine.

Does anyone understand the inspiration for the title of this note?

Are you referring to that song from a Disney movie ?

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

It's not 'a' disney movie! How can you do that to Toy story!

Raghav Vaidyanathan - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Raghav Vaidyanathan Haha sorry about that !! I really have watched a lot of movies , so I wasn't able to single it out to Toy Story .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

Similar thing happened to me , a few days ago I posted a problem titled 1Fallingrod\frac{1}{Falling rod}, which was reciprocal problem of Deepanshu's question 'Falling rod', but its title changed to Falling rod. So, can it be changed back to 1Fallingrod\frac{1}{Falling rod}.

I guess deepanshu would not like it being same.

Kushal Patankar - 6 years, 3 months ago

For problems that we want to share outside of Brilliant, we have to remove the Latex from the problem titles, since otherwise it will appear as \ ( \ frac{1} { Falling rod } \ ), which would be confusing as compared to a title of "Falling Rod".

All changes happen for a reason: to improve the experience on Brilliant. Sometimes, our changes don't work out as intended, and if that happens, let us know :)
