  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Well, I have passed high school and I am about to enter into a college. Still, My School experience was pretty different from most of the students.

One needs to understand that schools here follow a fixed curriculum and teachers are advised to teach on topics pertaining to the curriculum only. It is really a shame that a student cannot spread his/her wings of knowledge just on basis of school because the good teachers all teach at different coaching classes, which offer higher pay and where students are also much more interested in studying.

I went to a coaching class to study for IIT-JEE and the teachers were wonderful there, a stark contrast to the teachers at school. So, for me, the school was my coaching class! one could study as long as he wanted at the classes. School was just for board exams and for practicals. One could also see the difference in attitudes of students. My friends in school wanted to just pass in exams and waste their time. My friends in coaching classes were much more competitive and wanted to excel.

The coaching class culture in India generates millions of dollars of revenue each year and is very profitable. That is why, most of the better teachers prefer to teach in coaching classes than schools. However, this proves disadvantageous to the students with not so sound economical background, who cannot afford the fees of coaching classes!

Each word you said really echoed my views. Its like they are two opposite worlds - in school all you get is guys trying to think of new ways to bunk classes while the coaching classes have entirely taken over the education “business".

Siddharth Brahmbhatt - 7 years ago

Yep in some sense it is better than us but it is better if you have economical advantage.

AboutmeAbout me -I am from Eritrea the horn of Africa.I was sparked by the awesomeness of math in grade 7 where I was placed in a lower math class and had to repeat what I have learned. In summer of 7th grade I made a dedications to myself to learn introduction and intermediate algebra, also I started doing a lot of problems on geometry. I used online resources such as brightstorm and khan academy to learn.I attend MBHS one of the best high school in MD, but I always disappointed because I didn't make it to the gifted program. If I only had the power to go back in time, just kidding leave your past behind and focus on the present My future goal is to become admired physicist. $¨$\$\ddot\smile\$

I study at Nguyen Tat Thanh Gifted High School, Vietnam. If you are a student at my school, you have to choose one subject which you will use most of your time to study at school. Everyday at school is a challenging day! All students always try their best to be better. This make my school be nicer! The rank of studying is shown every month and 3 best students in each subjects of the month are rewarded. Everyone admires them very much! That really encourages students to study more. Studying at NTT school, i can see where i am. And this always make me try to be good! :D

I'm from Egypt (Africa) and actually education in Egypt is really horrible ... my math teacher in class is used to challenging us with hard problems not to learn but to "embarrass" us , and when I started to answer his questions , I thought that I'm really good at math but when I stumbled into this site I discovered that I'm nothing :D ... and that was really challenging ,so I decided to spend my summer holiday improving myself sorry for my terrible English :D

About my school and me:

I live in Virginia, which is a southern state in USA (it's pretty rough). I go to a REALLY crappy school called Berkeley Middle School. There I am constantly in conflict with the hoards of stupid and poorly trained teachers who I disagree with on various topics. "Finn Hulse" is probably the most popular teacher break-room topics of all time. I'm a student in Algebra 1 with lots of stupid people. I love to embarrass my teacher, Mr. Loudermilk, because he's terrible at math and it infuriates me to have to "learn" from my intellectual subordinate. Welcome to my world. It is my dream to have a "Brilliant Academy" where Brilliant students from around the world can come together with good teachers and learn for real! @Suyeon Khim this is a good place to set you sights on! :D

Kartik Sharma - 7 years ago

Why not call the Center for Gifted Education at William and Mary and see what they can do for you! They're right next door and usually outreach/education focused centers at major universities will bend over backwards trying to help gifted kids. After all, that's what they live for. You could look at their summer program for youth or take/audit a regular college course. I took at course at a local university when I was 10 and loved it, so I know such arrangements can work. Grouse here, we'll always listen, but be pro-active too if you can.

btw, for a long time you will be learning from people less bright than you. But there is a difference between intelligence and wisdom...

Finn Hulse - 7 years ago

Well, since none can probably identify my school over here, I'd like to tell you more about it now. India is perhaps the worst country you can ever imagine of , if you want to learn things like olympiad math and the like. Coaching institutes are taking contracts from olympiad people and coaching ( read as "forcing") students to top. These institutes don't let the creativity of the student to grow, which is actually quite necessary for success in math competitions. School here (Chennai) is unnecessarily long and also lengthier compared to North and East Indian schooling hours,.,..which makes it all the more unbearable. CBSE's dilution of syllabus has led to dilution of IQ levels of students too. Sorry to say, Indian Education system is in one of its worst ever crises and perhaps the only few states (Raj, Andra) where these coaching centers have even bought schools are only safe. :(

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Krishna Ar , I won't comment on India being the worst education system as I haven't seen other systems, maybe you haven't too. The thing is there aren't only negatives here-I'm pretty sure the amount of competitors you have here and the overall spirit does work in favour for us-and lets us excel.

Siddharth Brahmbhatt - 7 years ago

I completely dis-agree because you have not seen worse education systems. while you are right that there are shortages of good teachers, you cannot blame it on the education system.Blame it on the schools which offer extremely less pay. I also agree on the point that dilution of CBSE syllabus is bad, but dude you also have to think about other children which are not so bright that they may understand Olympiad mathematics.

Avineil Jain - 7 years ago

@Avineil Jain , I often get the same reply when I talk about the course being too easy-think about others. My point is that this problem arises due to students being forced. You seldom see a parent pushing his/her child compulsorily into sports against the child's wish while for education its not so. For example, if there are a 100 students in the science stream of my school, i would estimate that around 15 were forced into taking it, nearly 60 just joined it to get to any college and somehow get a degree so that they can get a job or get into the family business and maybe 10 odd don't know still how they ended up here. The thing is they often pull back the students who sincerely want to excel. Is it fair that the syllabus is diluted for them just because they are in majority? I think that passing grade 10 should be the benchmark for the tag 'literate' while grade 11 & 12 shouldn't be given the title school at all and only those who want to continue, should. What do you think?

Siddharth Brahmbhatt - 7 years ago

@Siddharth Brahmbhatt Right! That was rock-solid dude! Vocational courses must be open to all who dont wanna do science. Those WHO EXCEL , MUST BE SEPARATELY SCHOOLED. ( SCHOOL FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED). Otherwise I'm pretty sure, India won't develop.

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Krishna Ar Right, so there can be entrance exams for those schools also!

Avineil Jain - 7 years ago

@Avineil Jain I get the humor, and your point's pretty valid. We're on the same page on the coaching class thing. But what I dream of is a little more idealistic- after 10th grade, scrap the system we have now. Here the student takes a decision about what he/she loves most. No entrance test at all-you evaluate yourself. Just keep the final examination so tough that only those who are exceptional in that topic can pass. That would automatically discourage someone from entering a field he/she can't cope with.

Of course I see many realistic flaws in my idealistic plan, one of them being the rampant and outrageously fashionable copying in exams. But you can't blame me for chalking out a dream, can you?:-)

Siddharth Brahmbhatt - 7 years ago

@Siddharth Brahmbhatt Dude, but we have not studied even topics to realize what we want to pursue! Even now, I still don't know what to pursue !

Avineil Jain - 7 years ago

@Avineil Jain Touché. I have often been at a loss for words when someone asked me what I was studying till 10th. I guess we'd have to improve the primary education too, and make it free & creative rather than course-oriented. Even I don't know what I really want to do. Maybe we could make it a little more flexible so a student can change his/her stream if he/she realizes that they're better suited for something else. The problem you told about isn't just in my system, but it also exists currently.

Siddharth Brahmbhatt - 7 years ago

@Avineil Jain Yeah!

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Krishna Ar Hey wait a minute, you are just saying that there should be separate schools for those who excel, don't you think what could be it's consequences..... Firstly to start this would be like extreme discrimination for those who are not good. Imagine yourself being one of them . Let's then imagine you as a teacher, where would you like to go , to a school of brilliants or a school of dumbs.... ov course of brilliants. This would in fact result in concentration of less capable teachers in the schools of less capable students as all brainy teachers would flee to the school of brilliants . What this would result as - as the students who are less capable remain as that but in fact be coming more less capable anc thus degrading India's economy and growth. Reminding that you could find at most one in five capable student in the world , what about the other 4. This would mean that India ' s one forth population is degrading. And not to forget , when you first go to school means when you first stepped at school you were immediately not judged that you are good or bad , it needed observation. Mathx and thinking is not only the talent there are other talents too, you cannot means just keep on upgrading your talent and spoiling the other of the country. It is total discrimination. Isaac Newton was awful at maths when he was young, if we had put him on school of incapable could we then ever be able to know gravity , same for Max Plank, Einstein, Halley and many others. Ours, India ix the greatest democracy in the world, giving greatest equality and freedom , this would then then be preventing equal privileges to all, people

Utkarsh Dwivedi - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Krishna Ar How can think of such a discrimination. You only think of the intelligent people but what about the others???.....

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 9 months ago

Coming to another silly point of yours- DO ya think all Chinese and Koreans kids do olympiad math? In that case the world would be elitist. Wake-up -_-

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

yeah i agree with @Avineil Jain our education is itself confused.....our school teaching are different from others..things just happen opposite than what should take place

Sorry. I guess You are unaware of the fact that India is the one and only east-asian country that sucks at math and craps-up in IMO. It's shame is thankfully saved due to Bengalis who score a 24-25 on the 42 point test. All this could have been avoided if there had been alternative schools set up for the intellectually gifted- like in @Thanh Viet 's case. All I can I ask you to do is, not always compare yourself to inferiors and pride upon that. -_-

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

I agree. Indian education systems are pretty bad.

Hey, come on.... A great person never regrets about his life. It's your luck and you have to live that way. So, stop wasting your time on just thinking about your life. Rather, you should adapt to you life and come out as the best in the world. And, yeah being patriotic, I never likes your idea of criticizing your country every time. Why do you do that? I don't think that this is a quality of a real INDIAN(the best guys I know). BTW, I would recommend you to read Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography and yes, some more good books on the country with greatest potential. I know it wants a change, a big change, the change which would use all of its potential and give in turn a better India. But yeah, I am making a note on what's your views on HOW TO DEVELOP INDIA? And I hope that some concerned Brilliant people will post their views and help India to move forward in the path to glory. #WETHEINDIANS

Hi l have passed from College recently . but I can't forget my 3 year school days . These days changed my life . There are only 3 teacher for 400 students (total students of 8,9,10 class). We have only one teacher for math and science subjects .he is Rajesh Ku. Mandal. He taught math like a game which gives us fun . Before highschool we rarely opened math book for study. But in high school career me and friends addicted to math and science . That time the only source of study was book . we rarely heard about internet and computer (these were dreamy things ) . Me and my 5 friends were the first students in our locality who enrolled in science in 11th class in College . In our college day we came to know about various science and math competition and participated in it . My first achievement was when I qualified forKVPY. I only want to develope my love towards science ....Have a good day..

Let me share from Indonesia :D Well, maybe like other countries, Indonesia has many, many type of schools, and also teachers. I'll share mine. I was just finishing the study in a boarding school. I have connected to math even since I was in elementary. But, I learn something different in boarding. We used to learn, share and solve the problems together, that's usual. But, the feeling when I can help my friends especially in math (well, for most of them, math is the worst lesson. it's complicated and confusing), make them understand, love math, even some of them make me like their teacher. Those encourage me to be more and more "confident" in math. And the best thing is that I learned about 'life'. My teachers are not special because the lesson they taught, but the sincerity and the knowledge of life and also my religion they taught. Thank you, I'm very pleased to meet you here :)

Afifah Nabila - 7 years ago

Hi friends I'm 13, year 7(here call it form one, means secondary one) from Heng Ee high school, Penang, Malaysia. It's a one of the biggest schools in Malaysia with more than 3000 students. My school is popular with extra curricular activities especially the performing arts clubs such as choir, jazz band, Chinese orkestra and more, but I'm not in these clubs.

My school is a public school by the government. Based on the educational system, students need to study many subjects. At the end of a semester there is an examination. The teachers in my school are very kind, but the lessons may be a little boring sometimes.

But I don't know why, some students may have the concept of "study is for examinations only". They feel like to study the textbooks, notes...all in the curriculum only, but have not so much thirst of learning new things out of curriculum, maybe there are many tuitions or other activities make us too busy. However there are lots of lots of people on Brilliant are very great, especially at maths. Their level of maths is much higher than usual or curriculum. I really admired many Brilliant users that have broad knowledge--out of curriculum.

Ok, back to my school...there is some students in my school who are great at maths, but it seems like my school is not so active in maths...I envy some schools in my area organizes selection tests, lessons of some maths olympiad competitions (not my school T-T).

This is the first year I'm in secondary school. I hope that the next few years of school life will be more interesting. Actually, I wish that I can win a scholarship to study overseas (example Singapore) in future (I wish when I'm 15).

Here, I would like to ask fellow brilliantians some questions: How do you learn maths out of curriculum? Any suggested resources? And how long do you spend on doing maths a day? Thanks. :-D

I really like the period of my schooling. The school had no problems completing homework or writing research, essays, and other types of writing. Now I am in university and I just have to buy buy marketing paper at the company www.papersowl.com, which I have been working with for a long time, because often I simply do not cope with the task qualitatively. This happens for various reasons - procrastination, laziness, the complexity of the task, employment, and so on. What do you think about this? who had or has a similar problem?
