The Greatest Equation Ever...Sort Of...

If someone were to compile a list of the greatest mathematical equations ever, you'd see a lot of different equations. Some would say that all equations are beautiful and great. And there will be some top contenders like Euler's identity, eiπ+1=0e^{i\pi} +1=0 and Einstein's extremely popular E=mc2E=mc^2. But today you'll see the greatest equation ever. They are actually a pair of parametric equations that look like this:

What is so special about these equations, you say? Well, when plotted, the equations look like this:

Whether you're a fan of Poke'mon or math [or both], you should enjoy this! This is easily the greatest thing I discovered while fiddling around with Woframalpha. Here are a couple of more equations plotted. I'm not adding the equations. That would take up a lot of space.

Alt text Alt text Blaziken

Alt text Alt text Charmander

If you have a lot of time to spare, you can go through all of them here. There are over 700700 of them.

And you don't have to be restricted to Poke'mon. For example, here's Batman:

If you want, you can post your favorite curves on the comments section below. Have fun!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Great! I have a question that how did you copy those parametric equations (but it's in latex) or is it just an image?

I also have same question to Mursalin Habib

DreamRunner Moshi - 7 years, 5 months ago

What do you think?

Fortunately, I didn't type out the whole equation because that would have taken me half an hour [give or take] at least. It's an image. If you hover your mouse cursor over the image, you can see the alt text, "When will this end?". This was a reference to how big the equations are.

Is there someone that sits down trying out hundreds of combinations of equations to get the right one or do you doodle on a software and it spits out an equation?

Where did you get these parametric equations from?

shaurya gupta - 7 years, 5 months ago

Search up _ curve or __ equation to see if there exist a parametric equation of what you want. Do this on Wolfram Alpha

Daniel Liu - 7 years, 5 months ago

Here's another one.

Rahul Saha - 7 years, 5 months ago

How much time did you take to write the equation???

Anshuman Singh - 7 years, 5 months ago

Fortunately, it didn't take more than a minute. That's because I didn't type it out. It's an image.

suddenly I can't see how to enter a link - something I know i have done before!
