The New Brilliant

Well everything was going well, the newsfeed thing was cool. But now multiple choice questions?! They just take the fun out of everything!
I now really miss the old Brilliant.org.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

It was easier to find discussion topics for me in the old one...I wish there could be a search bar, to search for tags etc. without following them.

Hi Soham,

Could you tell us more about what you dislike about the multiple choice questions? I sort of assume you don't like them because they bring questions that people can get right by guessing to Brilliant, but I want to make sure and am curious if you have other thoughts on them.

Thanks for noticing this discussion. Well leave alone guessing, when 4 options are placed in front of you, you can easily check each of them for the properties the answer need to have. In combinatorics it's not readily possible but in NumberTheory and Algebra it is really very easy to check the 4 choices.

Well a lot of real world tests like AMC and others are multiple choice. It's still a very important skill to be able to narrow down answer choices. And also, without multiple choice, it will be a lot less convenient for David Mattingly to post his physics problems that ask for specific answers that aren't numbers.

@Finn Hulse Ok for physics with non-numerical answers it's ok. The thing is that real world tests like the AMC put a restriction to the time, and the time is set in such a way that you can't ace it just by brute-forcing
