The Regional Mathematical Olympiad

I am compiling a few problems from the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (the first level of selection for the Indian IMO team). Some problems have been adapted to suit Brilliant's needs (of a finite number answer).

If you like this set, I shall soon be compiling a few problems of the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (the second level of selection for the Indian IMO team).

Suggestions/comments are welcome.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Do help me out with preparation for RMO. This is the first time i am going to write this. Any structured methodology?

@Krishna Ar Well, all I can tell you is you have to practice number theory. Without practice, it is impossible to crack those problems. Also, try various approaches in geometry including working backwards. In algebra, try to learn as many theorems & solving strategies. The same is true for geometry. Combinatorics is fairly easy if you master Pigeon Hole Principle (which I am just completing) & don't forget to carry Geometry Box on the day of the examination. They give marks for diagrams too!

All the best!

Thank you. :). Is this your second/third time? Did you qualify the previous times? What books did you use? Did you take any coaching for this?

@Krishna Ar This year would be my second time. You should order the book An Excursion in Mathematics (Send a DD to the address). On the same page, Book no. 2, 3, 4 & 6 are the books that I referred.

Well, I didn't qualify the first time :(. I attribute it to my lack of seriousness & awareness about the exam. All the books I told you (except 2 & 6), I bought them after the exam.

I didn't take coaching the first time.

Anything else ? ;)

@Ameya Salankar Thanks again. Sorry for spamming this note with my personal concerns. Is the book ( excursion...) a good book to start with? ( I am a total neophyte and need to have understanding of all the necessary topics). I do have a copy of mathematical circles and have waded my way through half of it. You didnt take coaching the first time. What about this time? How are you preparing for it? Are you in Class 11? ( moving to) How did you find the books or how did you make use of the book?

@Krishna Ar @Ameya Salankar -And, by the way, another question to you would be - "From where do you get these problems of RMO/INMO from? Internet/Books?

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 2 months ago

@Krishna Ar @Krishna Ar Good question. I got all these problems from Excursion! I told you it is a superb book. And I buy all my books from Flipkart.com.

Anything else? ;)

@Ameya Salankar @Ameya Salankar - Do you give me a final go-ahead for "excursion"? Does it provide good attention to all branches? (algebra, geo, combinatorics, number theory,...?) . And is it good for beginners for understanding theory? And, this may be lame, yet... what are the number of pages in it? thanks :)

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar No problem! You are not spamming! If you want to have a hold on of concepts, have a combination of #2 (which I mentioned earlier) & Excursion. Excursion is a superb book. You can also download free pdf of Geometry Revisited.

I forgot to tell you about this book - 'Adventures in Problem Solving' by Shailesh Shirali (leader of the Indian IMO team in 1998 or something). This is also a good book.

I am moving to Class 11 (anxiously waiting for Class 10th10^{th} board results). I am also taking coaching this time (kind of).

Study sincerely & try to hook up with seniors who can help you!

@Ameya Salankar Thank You. ( What kind of coaching is it..... the one you mentioned? )

@Krishna Ar @Krishna Ar Nothing serious, a sort of interaction with an 85 year old sir (who has sent a boy to represent India in IMO way back in 2004 or something & I think one girl has a chance now - she is leaving for the OCSC Camp on Saturday). @Krishna Viswanathan also accompanies me there.

I am in class 9 and this is 1st time I have completed my geometry section now which part should I start i.e, inequality combinatorics , functions , theory of numbers, theory of equations
