This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

  1. How can 22 and 22 add upto 33 ?

Why you wrote 2 and 2 add upto 3. I understood that 2 remain so you wrote it, but what about the other one

@Tushar Malik If you're asking about the question you commented on, them it is for you to find out how it is possible. If I write the answer, others won't be able to enjoy. If you still want the answer, mail me. But I think you've got mixed up.....I have posted 2 different puzzles, note that they're on different longitudes (or possible latitudes)...-o:

If there were 33 birds sitting on the branch of a tree, and a shooter shoots one of them, then how many remain? This question needs some serious voting........

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

Option C- All three.

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

All three because the shooter shoots 'one of them', not one of the birds.

@Sharky Kesa Superb!! English is a crazy language. There's ambiguity everywhere, but let us assume for the sake of the question that 'them' refers to the birds......

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Satvik Golechha How many 'what' remain? Does what refer to the shooter, the birds, the branches of the tree, etc.?

Sharky Kesa - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Sharky Kesa The birds, of course. Had it been anythin' except the birds, would the question make sense~?

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Satvik Golechha How many birds remain dead or alive?

Sharky Kesa - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Sharky Kesa Forget it..... If I say 'How many remain alive', then you're gonna ask How many remain alive on the tree or off the tree. You're not gonna leave this question flawless!

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

Yes, the answer is 'all three' because you asked "how many remain", not "how many remain alive" or "how many remain dead". As the body(although dead) is there, this is the answer, I suppose.

Kartik Sharma - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Kartik Sharma Yup!! In fact, from three different point of views, all three options can be proved correct....maybe I should make a fourth option 'All of these'.

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Satvik Golechha Hey, I have just got a "5th" option after "all of these" and it says "Not even a single bird remain". This is because the question says "3 birds sitting on the branch", so they could be sitting one after another in a row and hence, when the shooter shoots "one of them", the first one in the row. The bullet speed was so fast that it penetrated the 1st one, then the 2nd one and then the 3rd(just like the 'plank' question). So, the answer can also be NOT EVEN A SINGLE BIRD. This is awesome, one statement, 5(or even more) answers!!!!

@Kartik Sharma Gosh!! This is getting crazy......

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Satvik Golechha My answer would be '0' birds. When the hunter shoots one of them, the sound of the gun would scare the birds away. The killed bird would then fall down.

Ritu Roy - 6 years, 11 months ago

There can be some brave birds or the birds can be deaf(if there are birds who are deaf ;))

Kartik Sharma - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Kartik Sharma I agree deaf birds ha ha

Mardokay Mosazghi - 6 years, 11 months ago

Option A- Only one.

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

Option B- Two remain.

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

Actually, the nine dots problem can be done in three lines

I have found it k)

But it can't be done in 3 lines without lifting off the pencil.

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

It can.

Sharky Kesa - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Sharky Kesa If you show me how to join those 9 dots with just 4 straight lines without lifting the pencil, assuming the dots to be of no length and breadth, I'll give you a chocolate. I think you're making two parallel lines meet at infinity.......

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Satvik Golechha Not at infinity but a long distance. It is slanted but this slant touches the points.

Sharky Kesa - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Sharky Kesa Oh! I see. But then you are considering the points to have a positive length or breadth, which is against their definition.........
