This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Light is an electromagnetic wave. According to Maxwell's equation, speed of an electromagnetic wave is given by v=1ϵμ=1ϵrϵ0μrμ0=cϵrμrv = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{\epsilon \mu}} = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{\epsilon_r \epsilon_0 \mu_r \mu_0}} = \dfrac{c}{\sqrt{ \epsilon_r \mu_r}} , where cc, ϵ0\epsilon_0 and μ0\mu_0 are speed of light, electric constant or permittivity and magnetic constant or permeability in free space (vacuum) respectively, and ϵr\epsilon_r and μr\mu_r are relative permittivity and relative permeability of a medium respectively. ϵr\epsilon_r and μr\mu_r are properties of a medium. For free space ϵr=μr=1\epsilon_r = \mu_r = 1 and for a medium denser than free space, it is always that ϵr>1\epsilon_r > 1 and μr>1\mu_r > 1. Therefore, v<cv < c.

I wish to know the reason of slow down of light..!! yups I agree that these formulas show that the speed decreases.. but my question is physically what is happening there which is reducing the speed of light..!!

As mentioned ϵ\epsilon and μ\mu are properties of a medium. These properties are affected by the matter in the medium with density. Another way of seeing this is that light always travels at the speed of light. But in a medium of matter it travels at the speed of light until it hits an atom. It is then absorbed and re-emitted in the same direction. The process takes a small amount of time and hence slows it down. The denser the medium, the more atoms per volumn and hence the more this happens and the lower the average speed and hence the higher the refractive index.

I'm not the best at Physics, but from what I know light possesses particle nature, so, probably because it collides with the particles in the medium (even if the slow-down is minute) ?

Vishnu Bhagyanath - 5 years, 11 months ago

Light gets obstructed in the medium. So its speed decreases,i guess

Akshit Srivastava - 5 years, 5 months ago

When light passes thru denser mediums , it coliides with the particles of the medium which decreases its speed . I guess.
