This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Heat is a form of energy, while temperature is not. Temperature is a physical quantity which determines the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.

What do you mean by degree of hotness or coldness??

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

Measure of or more precisely, extent of.

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Swapnil Das dont you think that hotness and coldness is a matter of sensation and will actually depend upon the temperature difference..

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta Hmm.. I agree with you, Sir!

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Swapnil Das So what is temperature??

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta Average kinetic energy of molecules ?

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

Vibrational kinetic energy of molecules in a body gives the temperature, more energy \Rightarrow more temperature.

And flow of that energy is heat.

What is the temperature of vacuum??

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

I guess temperature can not be defined somewhere there is no matter.

Kushal Patankar - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Kushal Patankar What if there are radiations but no matter??

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta Radiations can heat up objects but in this case there is nothing to get heated.

If you provide heat through radiations into a vacuum , it will not affect the vaccum, but if you put a thermometer there it will show some reading but that is not the temperature of vaccum.

I am not objecting that vaccum can not contain energy but temperature, nah 😔

@Kushal Patankar The temperature of outer space is zero or not defined??? Although google says that it is around 3kelvin..!!

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta Ya its 2.7 Kelvin

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Swapnil Das so is there any matter or vacuum.. ???

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta Minute amount of matter, Super high Vacuum can't be attained.

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Swapnil Das Can you quote any reference which says that absolute vacuum does not exist..!!

Rohit Gupta - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta I read it up in an IUPAP article, in the definition of super high vacuum.

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Rohit Gupta Such a vacuum will be of no temperature.

But as you said and I too read about it, bigbag added some background energy to universe and a temperature of 3° above absolute zero.

Above two statements contradict.

So not possible to create such a vacuum.

Kushal Patankar - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Swapnil Das Do you mean to say that, there doesn't exist a single point is the space where there is no matter (radiations are there)

Kushal Patankar - 5 years, 11 months ago

In a nutshell, Heat (precisely, heat energy), as we all know, is a very common physical quantity, whereas temperature is a measure of this heat energy! =)

Temperature of an isolated system can be defined, will it give us the measure of heat energy content in the system??
