This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science
related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should
explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments
should further the discussion of math and science.
When posting on Brilliant:
Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I think brilliant did this (make only 20 top scorers) to motivate the user to solve the problem sets as soon as possible, which allow them to be in the leaderboard even just for a while (because the leaderboard sorted by life time point). How if you make the leaderboard sorted by how fast the user solved the problem? It would be more interesting.
We actually mostly shortened the leader board because it looked better shorter and we thought it would marginally help the page load faster for some user's.
Additionally, as we get bigger we would like it to feel less like you are competing globally to be the best in the world and more like "meeting and interacting with like minded individuals from all over the world," to quote Thaddeus below. We think making Brilliant more competitive would be fun, but we do not necessarily think that a complete (or even just long) list ranking of user's in your level on Brilliant for the week is the most fun way to set the stakes of the competition. Deemphasizing your weekly rank on Brilliant was a step in that direction. Future revisions might involve leader boards that show your position relative to other's in the parameters of your choosing. E.g. they could be user's near you, user's like you, possibly browse most improved users over the last month etc... How leader boards work, and how you encounter other's on this site is going to change a lot over the course of the year. This was just one incremental change.
Thank you all for your opinions. It is interesting how divided peoples opinions are on most of the ideas in this thread. We will take them into account in future designs.
Hmm..Maybe an interface that upon the users command displays the user's rank in life time points, country, or fastest solvers..But the fastest solvers proposal would be unfair because of the varying time zones..
yes i think so, but still 20 ppl on board, I wanna see my lil brother on that board, but i fortunatelly i cant, i have invited him, & showing he's still level 2 so I'dont know if he's doing his homework or not on this site..
I agree with Dhelia and Muhammad..You are more in touch with the brilliant community when the top 50 or 100 are displayed.Otherwise, a leader board of 20 users will more or less always be the same because the leader board is based on life time points. This would discourage newer members.A way to interact with other members would also be great, but I guess this feature would take a massive renovation of the site and will probably added in a matter of time.
Who said it is based on lifetime points ? I can see quite many users having points <10K who feature in this list, while on the other hand I myself being higher than that do not feature in the same. I think leaderboard is updated according to the number of problems one has solved correctly. But I agree with you that the old view of top scorers was certainly better than the new one.
It is based on life time points,ie if two people solve the same number of problems in a given week's problem set,the one with the higher number of life time points will rank better than that of the one with the lower number of lifetime points.

This is true. The leader boards are ranked based on who has accumulated the most points in a level, in a week. Ties are broken based on lifetime points. This worked well in the past, but is no longer ideal as we now have enough people that solve all of the problems in a week, such that the rankings unfairly privilege those who have been on the site a long time. We will consider other criteria for tie-breaking such as speed in the future iterations of the leader boards.

but sir this will not give us the correct positions.... some people are on brilliant from long time while some had just joined in.... obviously the older ones will have more lifetime points then the new members :|
IMO, having the students chat and know each other has a different setting. Just not at Brilliant. I can't think of any system where that can't be abused. Think how easy it would be to exchange answers for idk money, perhaps? Or it could be used to cheat to get that brilliant tee faster. I for one seriously want that shirt. XD
Chat feature may increase the probability to ask each other (simply say, cheating).
But, I agree for showing all people on that list with some condition applied. that's when every people still felt good with their low rank even the worst one.
that's mean I disagree too.
I think the student that stay on the 20th still felt good about their rank. So, that's perfect and I think Brilliant.org Staff know this reason too.
With just only 20 top scorrer showing up to all member, it's not like a privation. But the low score has it.
I absolutely agree when we able to know our score by ourself privately, but only 20th top scorer show up to all member.
I guess, it is still a mystery that on which bases does Brilliant rank people. According to the observation made by me, I saw that people with ranks from 1-50 were all in descending order of their points. The first position had the highest of them. This pushed me to conclude that Brilliant may rank people according the number of question one has solved, and if they have solved equal number of questions, the one with more points is placed above. Hope I am not wrong.

Is it depends on time zone? I don't think so.
Your time zone can be set under account settings.
I think not... Farizzzz... he he he... but I disagree... very difficult for absen he he he
it will be exciting if we can see all people from all level on the board, do you agree?

Yeah,I think that's what brilliant should be about, meeting and interacting with like minded individuals from all over the world.

It seems fixed now.
I think we should be able to see our own position in the list. Even we should be able to see how these top scorers score such fast and quick.
jkjnknmkmknjnjknjk
Waht the comment below says is true once the player makes equal scores they should be distinguished by how fast they solved it
I cannot see top scorers this week !!! why is it so

Yes.
It would be nice if you could see you position, even if not top100.
Also, would be cool do have "Friendship" functions... Team formations... i think someday we will get there.
I agree with u too, Muhammad. So many brilliants does!
i think it is not only the top20 scorers, every time i check,i see top50 scorers,,but it would be better if they will show top100,,
support u man
What i feel is that if we could search our position in a particular subject, then displaying top 20 scorers would be just fine..
me too, i want to know all student on brilliant, we chat and 'know' each other, is that good?

I feel that we should be able to message and chat with other people on brilliant, and have 100 people shown as well.

I dont agree to brilliant with only one thing..... that some people who have less Lifetime points are in top of Leaderboard
I got 5,480 but the second place in leaderboard is below 5000
