Three men moved to a motel ...The clerk said that it will cost $10 each for a room.Which means $ 30...When the three went away...The clerk found that he took $5 more from them i.e. $( 30-5 )=$25
Now he went to the manager to get rid of this tension...
After hearing the incident Manager replied 'Give me $25,Take $2 for yourself & Distribute $3 between three of them(The three men) '
Now ,The question
Total expense by all three men = $9(10-1)
Which means = 9* 3 =27
Again ,27+2=29 ($2 taken by the clerk)
Now where the $1 gone?

the misleading calculation presented by the author leads to think that $1 is missing, which actually is not the case.
each spent $9, so in total they together spent $27. now, $27 minus $2 taken by the clerk is $25 which is the amount they paid for the room.
as for the $30 originally paid, they can be obtained again by doing: 25 for the room + 3 for each man + 2 for the clerk.
