This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Maths education is not the only problem. I am just focusing my efforts to improve how people should feel about maths. Maths should be recognized as being a culture. Mathematicians and scientists are humans too, what they create contributes to human culture. Also, people should appreciate math. I think the constant studying of how to get the answers is destroys any opportunity of appreciation because they just want to it get over with (pass the exam). If people learn foreign languages best by immersion and constant usage (application), math should be no exception. That's why I think exams makes our current system backwards. To much time is wasted on studying solutions, and reviewing the subject over and over. Instead, if people sat down and chat about it, perhaps, the knowledge will sink in (through experience) and people can move on investigating new topics. If algebra has become second nature, there is no need for reviewing algebra every year.
