Time magazine recently posted an article entitled How to make your kids smarter: 10 steps backed by science.
Do you agree with their claims? Are there any other steps which you would suggest to add to the list?
The steps are
1) Music lessons
2) The dumb jock is a myth
3) Don't read to your kids, read with them
4) Sleep deprivation makes kids stupid
5) IQ isn't worth much without self-discipline
6) Learning is an active process
7) Treats can be a good thing - at the right time
8) Happy kids = Successful kids
9) Peer group matters
10) Believe in them

Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

Can you please tell me how music lessons will help them?

Music helps big time! It helps in increasing concentration and brings discipline in a child!

Er...don't include rap or rock metal in that.Even Then concentration does increase...but only towards the lyrics. Having said that I love both rap and hard rock tremendously.

I agree !
Yeah, I agree.I think a child must be given a chance to choose rather than have it chosen by elders.(Obviously to some limit.) But it works. Letting them to choose at the same time makes them think "should I choose this, or should I choose that?" Which is needed. Like John Steinbeck's "East Of Eden".(the novel is based on one word "timshell" meaning "thou mayest" )
Don't make them greedy
