Weekly Problems

Hey Brilliant! I'm already trying the new layout so I think I am not able to comment it for respect to Brilliant Staff. But today is Monday, and Mondays are beautiful in my life because and only because there are new Weekly Problems, and right now I don't see them anywhere. I don't know if it's me or they have been canceled. The key point in Weekly problems for people like me(I mean people who like Maths but have not really big knowledge of Mathematics) is that someone has put the weekly problems in order to be solved acording to your level, and it helps a lot becase you can improve because you know this problem suits wih your level. But now, when I'm doing problems of for example "Best of Algebra" I don't know if I could solve them with the Mathematical knowledge I have, and I easily give up. So my request is to say in which level would the problems be-. That's all.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Hi Jordi,

As a general rule of thumb, problems in a topic that have a higher rating than your rating are likely to be hard for you, and problems that have a rating lower than your personal rating are likely to be easier. In the "Best of" feeds, all the problems shared by these feeds have a rating attached to them, which can give you a clue as to their difficulty. The problems written by other members that are reshared by the "Best of" feeds do not have ratings yet, but we will soon implement a system that assigns them a rating, as people attempt to solve it.

Regardless it's sounds like you would like some better visual clues in your feed as to how hard a problem is. Do you think portraying problem ratings with level colors would help you?

Yes some visual clues would help. Assigning a color with the set of rating would help, but what I'm trying to say is for example, Imagine a problem, a difficult problem which can be solved using basic mathatica but it is hard to find the solution. Let's assign it a rating of 2400. And now think with a problem which can be solved using higher mathematica(complicated geometry theorems for example). Although the solution using these difficult theorems will be easier the rating won't be extremely big, because if you know these theorems the solution follows easily, so let's put it a rating of 2300-2200 In levels 2-3-4 problems can have big ratings but you know you can solve them. That's an information you miss if you don't suit the problem into a level.

sorting and filtering by rating should help.

looking at all the feedback in the communties, you guys should really consider bringing weekly challenges back, Jordi put it beautifully, it was refreshing coming here every week for new problems when one had the time to do so. your churn numbers will go up, i guess you will see for yourself next week.
