What are your favorite math texts?

As a math teacher I am always interested in new books, I have currently finished "The Joy of X" and "The Code Book" and found them extremely interesting. What books have you read, that involves mathematics?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I recently read "Chaos" by James Gleick. It was really readable, had good diagrams, and lots of recent history with the math.

Felipe Gonzales - 8 years, 5 months ago

"Through Genius the Great Theorems of Mathematics" by Dunham is a great read.

Alan Zhang - 8 years, 5 months ago

"Proofs from the Book" Volume 1 (and 2). Some of the mathematical ideas are hard, and the book presents a very clear exposition that illustrates the important approaches used to solve the problems.

Read " The man who knew infinity by Robert kanigel (biography of ramanujan) and fermat's engima (fermat last theorem) (nice book)

Shivang Jindal - 8 years, 5 months ago

'Road to Reality' by Roger Penrose. I got a few hundred pages in before giving up.

How about New Horizons in Geometry by Tom Apostol and Mamikon Mnatsakanian! Wonderful illustrations! And many Archimedes-style innovations!
