What do you think about the new design of Brilliant?

I think that some of the things are strange. Here are the things:

  • To add a comment in a note you have to scroll all the way down, because the add a comment space is at the bottom of the page. Fixed.

  • The font that is used for writing Today, Courses, Practice, Community, Go Premium looks like that there is a space between the letters.

  • For me the globe was better than the three vertical lines( at the top right corner).

  • The number of solvers of a problem starts right when the photo of the member ends(at the right vertical end). Example. Fixed.

    • If there is/are comment(s) for a solution they are all shown. This is bad because if there are more solutions you can't see them.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I think the amount that comments to a solution, or comments to those comments (second order comments?) are shifted sometimes makes it difficult to see, which comment they refer to.

On the other hand, when the shift is too big, everything gets aligned on the right hand side and uses only half of the screen. I'm using my smartphone, so actually I shouldn't really complain about the lack of space.

Hi @Henry U – we agree that this isn't quite optimal yet, and will keep tweaking the indenting and collapsing until it looks good on all platforms.

Silas Hundt Staff - 2 years, 5 months ago

Does anyone know, how solutions to a problem are sorted now, taking all four ways to judge them – helpful, interesting, brilliant, confusing – into account?

Are they sorted just by helpful-votes and if these are the same for two solutions, then interesting-votes and so on?

Or maybe, is there a weighted sum of the four votes that gives each solution a total "score"?

Also, is the time a solution is posted important? I think new solutions should get a chance of being seen and rated.

I will try to find out.

I always see them sorted by votes. They used to be sorted by upvotes and now I was wondering how the new order is determined.

Maybe this is user-defined?

@Henry U We can always ask the brilliant team.

B D - 2 years, 5 months ago

@Henry U Actually they are sorted by votes but I don't know how.

B D - 2 years, 5 months ago

@Henry U and B D – they are sorted by the sum of the reactions except "confused", which currently doesn't count for up or down.

Yep, we enabled this so that it was more obvious that people can and should discuss the explanations. As the discussions grow, we'll get a little bit more sophisticated with collapsing and showing threads.

@Calvin Lin, did brilliant decided to stop POTW

Yes, as the modal on problems of the week indicated, we're making Daily Problems instead of problems of the week. All past problems of the week will be accessible in the archives.

Silas Hundt Staff - 2 years, 5 months ago

Ok. But do brilliant staff having further any ideas to take problems from the community for daily problems.

Ram Mohith - 2 years, 5 months ago

@Silas Hundt I have another thing I noticed. The solutions to comunity problems are counted and before the first solution there is a text that says how many solutions there are. Why isn't that added to the daily problems? Or did I just overlook it?

Henry U - 2 years, 5 months ago

Maybe because they added the daily problems eight days ago and it's new Brilliant stuff couldn't think for everything.

The hide and show button for the comments for a solution does not work.

B D - 2 years, 5 months ago

Hi B D – that button should be gone. Can you point me to where you're seeing that button?

Silas Hundt Staff - 2 years, 5 months ago

The button was on the down left corner. But it's gone.
