What looks like an enjoyable mathematics competition - with cash prizes!

This came through my inbox today. It seemed like something the members of our Brilliant community would like in that it is a more sophisticated mathematical problem of the same scope as Hunger Games. Plus, there are prizes!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I think this is the website right here: Societe du Calcul Mathematique SA. Sorry I don't know how to put the accents on their name in markdown. The site appears to be in English.

The competition is being thrown by that organization (the SCMSA) in conjunction with the Federation Francaise des jeux Mathematique. Alas this page is in French.

I'm confused on one matter though. How are we to write the solutions? Do they need rigorous justifications? Should they rely solely on mathematics? Should they use estimates (say with the Normal Distribution)? Could they use computer programs and simulations? I can't seem to find answers anywhere.

can people who dont live live in europe still attend this math type of thing?

The rules say everyone can participate, and they have previously allowed submissions from multiple countries, so I don't see why not. However, if you are curious, ask them!

Amazing!!!...But where do we submit the answers and in what format?

it's at the end of the pdf.

Participants should send their solution, in pdf format, in English or in French, no later than April 30th, 2014, to the email address: ffjm@wanadoo.fr.

Very neat problem!

Can you give a link to the website you got this from? Preferably the website is in English.

All I have is the link to the pdf I got in the email. If you can find a website, please repost it here so everyone can check it out.
