What should go on the new Brilliant homepage?

Hey everyone, we came up with a new layout for Brilliant, to leave more room on the homepage for a dashboard to help you quickly get to different parts of the site.

Currently, the homepage is very minimal – we only show you your topics and some suggested practice sections. You can help us decide what to add next by telling us what you would like to see. Here are a few ideas:

  • A preview of the 5 best new problems and notes since your last visit, with a link to see all new posts from the community
  • A featured problem of the day (Mondays are easiest, Sundays are hardest)
  • A featured wiki page of the day
  • If you're a contributor to Brilliant, stats on your posts from the past week
  • Your level in every topic
  • A leaderboard preview with the most recently active people you follow, pointing to the full leaderboard
  • Notifications about new comments or solutions on problems or notes that you recently viewed
  • Links to wiki pages for recent practice sections you visited, in addition to links to the problem sets (which already exist on the new homepage)
  • Links to drafts of wiki pages, problems, notes, or solutions you were recently writing (which includes the ability to save drafts)
  • A preview of the 5 most recent items you saved to a set, with a link to take you directly to all of your sets

Let us know which ones are your favorites, or feel free to make suggestions that are not already on this list. Any of these features will take us a while to implement, so we'd like to get a sense of what you'd like to see the most, to inform what we work on next.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

P.S. If you would also like to comment on how we can improve the Community tab, you can do so in this thread.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

the new homepage's not too good

Mehul Chaturvedi - 6 years, 7 months ago

A points predicter which would tell us how many pts we would lose/gain from the problem.

Great idea!!! :D

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 7 months ago

even I would love it..

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 7 months ago

I would also love a level 6

Trevor Arashiro - 6 years, 7 months ago

great idea as 6 stands for perfection(mathematically)

Aneesh Kundu - 6 years, 7 months ago

That's a great idea!!

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 7 months ago

I think notifications inside the site would be a great idea.

Sanjeet Raria - 6 years, 7 months ago

Bullet point- 4,6,7,8 mainly, addtl.-9. Though all the points are quite cool.

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 7 months ago

Stats, levels and notifications.

Victor Loh - 6 years, 7 months ago

Featured questions, Featured wiki, And notifications are a great idea

Sualeh Asif - 6 years, 7 months ago

''A preview of the 5 best new problems and notes since your last visit, with a link to see all new posts from the community, Your level in every topic, and Links to wiki pages for recent practice sections you visited, in addition to links to the problem sets (which already exist on the new homepage) '' --are my favourites from the above list; though all the points are quite good.

Also, i would like to see a small ticker that shows recent activity by people you follow as mentioned by @Agnishom Chattopadhyay

Ritu Roy - 6 years, 7 months ago

The stats and notifications idea is the most appealing to me. Will we have a tiled interface?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 7 months ago

We are not sure what the interface will be yet. First we will collect feedback on what people would like to see most, and then design around the most requested features.

By the way, if you would also like to comment on how we can improve the Community tab, you can do so in this thread.

One more idea: A small ticker that shows recent activity by people you follow

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 7 months ago

@Agnishom Chattopadhyay Thanks for the suggestion!

Suyeon Khim Staff - 6 years, 7 months ago

I second that. It would be great to have stats on our posts (notes, comments, solutions, problems)from the past week,

Trevor Arashiro - 6 years, 7 months ago

And a problem of the day would be great

Trevor Arashiro - 6 years, 7 months ago

Doubt Section

U Z - 6 years, 7 months ago

Discussion room

Kushal Patankar - 6 years, 7 months ago

one more idea : chat option (for removal of doubts) with staff members like Calvin lin, Suyeon Khim etc or moderaters like Depaanshu Gupta , Aditya Raut etc when they are online

U Z - 6 years, 7 months ago

That would be quite hard for the mods to manage, but it is a good idea. Rather than a direct chat, because some people would just put Stuff like "hi" in the chat or multiple people would contact one mod at the same time, how about a request help button and if a mod or anyone isn't too busy and feels confident on that problem, they can help the person on the problem

Trevor Arashiro - 6 years, 7 months ago

Doubt about what? Wouldn't the chat thing in the home page be very distracting?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 7 months ago

Seriously it should be there, some people report the problems to talk to me thats insane!

Krishna Sharma - 6 years, 7 months ago

@Krishna Sharma yes sorry

U Z - 6 years, 7 months ago

@U Z Why are you sorry? I am in support of chat option

@Krishna Sharma Are you a moderator?

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 7 months ago

The first one is definetely the best about improving at math and regarding the layout all of them are very good for me.But please try to fix the problem with the "load more" button.

lawrence Bush - 6 years, 7 months ago

OK thanks. By "the first one" do you mean "A preview of the 5 best new problems and notes since your last visit"? We know about the issue with the "load more" button and are looking into it.

YES

5 best problems under each level

U Z - 6 years, 7 months ago

I think the preview of the 5 best problems and notes is a good idea. Also, I think the featured problem and wiki are good too. For those who preferred the old Brilliant format, that would be great. And I don't know if you guys think this is weird, but I'd like to see the graph in the stats page in logarithmic scale :)

Tan Li Xuan - 6 years, 7 months ago

It should be problem of the day

Mehul Chaturvedi - 6 years, 7 months ago

I liked... 1.5 Best new problems from the last visit 2.Second point:featured problem of the day 3.Notifications 4. Stats on our post from past week. Also I've one suggestion I think that our added topics tabs should show the colour of our level in that respective topic or the default one if have not yet any level in it

Abhishek Singh - 6 years, 7 months ago

Just wanted to commend you and the Brilliant staff on the design of the Home and Community pages. The look and functionality are excellent!

I'm curious if you are still planning on eliminating the reshare option. I'm still on the fence about the option. On the one hand I like to know which questions my network finds interesting and use it liberally myself, but on the other the onslaught of reshares tends to drown out the presence of new questions being posted, making it difficult for them to gain traction.

Anyway, thanks again for creating this great site. :)

Brian Charlesworth - 6 years, 4 months ago

How about the wiki page and featured problem ? :)

Shreya R - 6 years, 7 months ago

you can also add a new tab about only and only proof problems.

Aneesh Kundu - 6 years, 7 months ago

In addition it would be great if we could compete against each other (time challenges and stuff) and test our speeds

Swarupendra Nath Chakraborty - 6 years, 7 months ago

The time challenge idea given by Swarupendra Nath Chakraborty would be a better idea I suppose!

Venkatkalyan Vadlamudi - 6 years, 7 months ago

At Present how about making it read "Work in Progress" "jump in to help" Building a new ... explanation..or concept...or whatever nice...as all helpful contributions are accepted.

ARYΔ :)

Arya Samanta - 6 years, 7 months ago

Brilliant can't simply be just a math website... We can allow Science and/or English too!

Jeremy Bansil - 6 years, 7 months ago

It should be problem of the day

Mehul Chaturvedi - 6 years, 7 months ago

Could you Please add a recent viewed or some sort of thing in the brilliant app? Coz somehow I always see a Q's, solve it n when I return, I can't find it.

Lavisha Parab - 6 years, 7 months ago

PLEASE CHANGE HOME PAGE

Mehul Chaturvedi - 6 years, 7 months ago

I think initial level of the problem must not be decided by the user...your staff must first view the problem and then decide the level

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 7 months ago

well it is done by the staff only. We only suggest a level, it is the staff only which decides the level of the question.

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 7 months ago

If 'L' stands for level then 'L' must tend to infinity .If Two person are on level 5, there's a probability that one of them is more talented than the other . So, he must deserve a next level . Same thing may happen if two person are on 'n' th level . Hence, 'L' must tend to infinity based on the points

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 7 months ago

Can you please bring back your feature which displays the activities of the people you are following i.e., their streak, the point they scored recently as it becomes easy to know about their activity????

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 7 months ago

For that, you should go on the 'Stats' tab and then you should click on 'Leaderboard' tab and then you can see the activities of the people you follow.

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 7 months ago

Feature Request: A computer science problem section like HackerRank.Com

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 7 months ago

I'll tell you what I want.

I'll let you construct your Brilliant universe the way you want it, and I'll just judge the finished product (I'll just take the limit as tt\rightarrow \infty...).

But what I need, is Printable Brilliant.

Cheers, awesome staff.
