What that must not be asked?

There are some very simple questions in mathematics which don't seem to have a clear answer.

The value of 00\frac{0}{0} is one of them.

Similarly, there are others which clearly have an answer which "do not lead anywhere", like i=11i\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{i}.

In the presence of such problems, is it valid to ask the following question? What is the value of

limmn=1m12nn=1m12n1 \lim_{m \to \infty} \dfrac{\sum_{n=1}^{m}\frac{1}{2n}}{\sum_{n=1}^{m}\frac{1}{2n-1}}

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

The expression is undefined because it's in the form of \frac \infty\infty .

Note that your expression is different from limmn=1m12nn=1m12n1 \displaystyle \lim_{m\to\infty} \dfrac{ \sum_{{{\color{#D61F06}{n}}=1}}^m { \frac1{2n} } }{ \sum_{{{\color{#D61F06}{n}}=1}}^m {\frac1{2n-1} } } .

True. I am modifying the expression to make it more sensible.
