[Ask Brilliant] Where does Brilliant get funds?

I assume that there are costs in producing and shipping the lanyards. Also, recently we have seen Brilliant advertisements all over the internet. I'm a little bit curious where Brilliant get its money given that there are currently no ads in this site.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Brilliant is an experimental company, and makes no money right now. As of today, we use investment money to operate and grow the site.

Why are we doing this? As it says in our FAQs we identify bright people around the world, so that bright people are found and recruited into the best schools, companies, and communities as possible. We would like to make opportunities for the talented youth of the world accessible to all talented youth with web browsers, and not just those with privilege. This is the sort of thing the internet was made for!

In the future, some features on the site may cost money. In addition, schools and companies may be able to pay to recruit people like you through the site. We will certainly alert all of you well in advance before we implement either of these changes. Right now, we are focused on making the best site possible for bright, motivated people everywhere to push their intellects in math and physics.

As for the advertisements all over the internet, that is pretty cheap if you’re doing it right :)

For lanyards/t-shirts, I'm sure that buying them in bulk doesn't cost too much. Maybe less than the salary of one worker.
