  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I must say, unfortunately, I have not researched many mathematicians/scientists enough to give an honest opinion of them. I think they are all great enough just for loving math and the logical world. Some tops though:

1) Calvin L
2) Peter T

3) The rest of the Brilliant team (which really encompasses and ties with #1 and #2, just that those two get mentioned a lot. Seriously, thank you unnamed people.)

4) The whole Brilliant community of users

5) Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, because I read a biography about him and he has a funny first name.

I assure you my contributions to science(geology) are nearly irrelevant and my contributions to mathematics non-existent. We are flattered nontheless :)

Peter Taylor Staff - 7 years, 7 months ago

I would beg to differ. I don't know about your geographical intelligence, but as for mathematic contributions you are wrong.

You, through Brilliant, have inspired countless individuals, most notably youths, who are now ready to tackle the field of mathematics themselves. You have helped start a website that reaches not only thousands today but potentially thousands more in the future. You have the privilege of talking to the minds of tomorrow. You have the privilege of vicariously experiencing hundreds of discoveries that We will make. You are among the most admired people today for what you've done, no matter how indirectly you've done it.

*Where "you" is the plural form in addressing the Brilliant team, of course.

Biswadeep Sen - 7 years, 7 months ago

John von Neumann without a doubt for me.

One of the most impactful and prolific geniuses of our time.

He made major contributions to a number of fields, including mathematics (foundations of mathematics, functional analysis, ergodic theory, geometry, topology, and numerical analysis), physics (quantum mechanics, hydrodynamics, and fluid dynamics), economics (game theory), computer science (Von Neumann architecture, linear programming, self-replicating machines, stochastic computing), and statistics.

Angel Leon - 7 years, 7 months ago

Hmm I am fickle about favorites, but right now my polymath hero of the moment is probably Militun Milankovitch. Not someone you read about everyday, but I am fond of his work.

Peter Taylor Staff - 7 years, 7 months ago

Mr. Zuming Feng for Math, Prof. Walter Lewin for Physics.

Ahaan Rungta - 7 years, 7 months ago

I'll pick a scientist. Let's go with Michele Besso.

And all of you go "who?" The better question is "why?"

Schweitzer and Curie are nice too.

David Mattingly Staff - 7 years, 7 months ago

Possibly because of how he influenced other scientists, rather than make direct contributions?

Nikhil Pandya - 7 years, 7 months ago

That's one part, yes. The other is that, imho, mathematical or scientific genius is a gift and outside anyone's control. How people use their gifts and live their life is what I feel is important. Hence Besso, who never got the credit he deserved, remained humble and not bitter towards his friend, Einstein, and stayed a "good man" with his wife and family. For those who don't know the story of Einstein and Besso, see here.

In a survey, there will be a list of scientists which people can add (names only.. no comments) and other people can either vote up existing or add new name to the list if their favorite is not in the list. This way we will see a clear picture. Can you do it Calvin sir?

Michio Kaku

Djordje Marjanovic - 7 years, 7 months ago

I am very much inspired by Nikola Tesla whose many of the great discoveries most people don't know about. He invented the "Alternating Current". He was the one who invented Radar, Remote control, Neon lightning, modern electic motor, wireless communications and many many more things but never got the credit. He even built a tower which could provide free wireless energy to the whole Earth but it was demolished before its completion, due to lack of funding and no profit.

To know about more of his inventions and discoveries, you can go to this link - http://theoatmeal.com/comics/tesla

Prakkash Manohar - 7 years, 7 months ago

As brilliant an engineer as he was, I think he was a bit of a crackpot (http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/2322/teslas-theory-of-gravity) when it came to physics. I'm also not sure how much energy that scheme could really have supplied, although I'd love to read a more in depth analysis of the design.

A L - 7 years, 7 months ago

Gauss is definitely amazing but my favourite is Ramanujan. I also like Peter Higgs.

Shubham Bhargava - 7 years, 7 months ago

Among mathematicians I like S.Ramanujan because of his exceptional contributions in almost every branch of mathematics even without any formal training. He had a great insight and made huge mental leaps in arriving at a result.

Among scientists as you see from my profile picture, I like Einstein.

Krishna Jha - 7 years, 7 months ago

Mine is Newton :)

jatin yadav - 7 years, 7 months ago

Well mine is Ramanujan.... We must count each scientist name in comments

Dinesh Chavan - 7 years, 7 months ago

Einstein for sure! I especially like reading his article "On the electrodynamics of moving bodies" I think it's the best way to learn relativity.

Welcome to Brilliant! I hope you have been enjoying the problems and discussions.

Those 2 are indeed gods in their fields. I would love to have a goddess visit me in my sleep and whisper amazing math equations to me :) Of course, those equations were related to ones that Ramanujan was already innately aware of, and his brain was making various connections while sleeping.

Calvin Lin Staff - 7 years, 7 months ago

Lots of them... Definitely Euler, Wiles and Perelman on your list. The others I admire as well but these three more so. I would also include Feynman, Schrodinger and Dirac. Perelman is admirable for his modesty, Wiles for his willingness to work on one problem until solution and Euler for his amazing creativity with mathematics.

Cole Coupland - 7 years, 7 months ago

There is no maths without zero we can see calculations based on zero in the book of aryabhatta Who invented zero?

swamicharan medisetti - 7 years, 7 months ago

It's almost impossible to imagine a world without zero. It's even crazier to think that people could do math for centuries without that concept!

In a similar vein, it's almost impossible to imagine a world without irrational numbers. Yet, during the time of Pythagoras, believing in the existence of irrational numbers can get you killed.

Calvin Lin Staff - 7 years, 7 months ago

yes irrational numbers are important but zero is more important we all know that computer language is in the form of zeros and ones . computer not works

swamicharan medisetti - 7 years, 6 months ago

but it was Brahmagupta who gave it a definite symbol. Aryabhata or Brahmagupta whoever it may be the contribution of indians in the field of mathematics is really outstanding

Anirudh n - 7 years, 7 months ago

Evariste Galois. Galois was such a young mathematician yet he created a new field in mathematics, what would happen if he had lived longer, would the world be different today in aspects such as technology?

Anqi Li - 7 years, 7 months ago

i can't decide between newton and einstein.. they both made such incredible leaps of intuition

Jord W - 7 years, 7 months ago

So many greats to choose from, but who could go past Euler. The beauty of some of his theorems and identities, the leaps of logic and intuition in number series, and the sheer amount of mathematics that was discovered by just one person is amazing.

Physicists and mathematicians sometimes jest that, in an effort to avoid naming everything after Euler, discoveries and theorems are named after the "first person after Euler to discover it"

Ramanujan is my favorite mathematician

One of my favorite scientists at the moment is Rosalind Franklin. She found out that the DNA structure was actually a double helix. The structure of DNA is important because it affects in DNA copying, mitosis, etc. Here is the famous picture of what she found:

actually... this is my story... I haven't loved any mathematician or scientist truly... instead, I loved their contributions... it may be a thankless act, but they are not alive now... But the best was of Georg cantor...
