Why does Brilliant disable a user from leaving a new answer after deleting an answer?

I am new here; i just joined today. But I haven't been posting answers, I just solve them and go right ahead because the LaTeX formatting never comes out right in the preview.

Just now, I finally decided to post a Math answer anyway, but it was unreadable. I deleted my answer, thinking I'll answer the question again - but this time I'd format it offline, take a screenshot and upload the image. Alas, I was not allowed to post a new answer.

This problem

I must say it is a rather frustrating experience.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Hi Oyekola,

Welcome to Brilliant!

1) We limit the number of solutions that you can submit to only 1, which is why you couldn't submit your another solution.

2) To get the latex code to display, you have to use the brackets \(\) \backslash ( \quad \backslash) around your Latex code. I've updated your solution so that you can refer to it, by clicking on the edit button.

3) To use markdown to display hyperlinks (in this note) or images (in the problem), you should not leave a space between [] and (). I fixed it in both instances, so you can edit it to take a look.

I have undeleted your solution, and edited the Latex (by simply adding the relevant brackets around your Latex code.) If you do not want to display your solution, you may delete it.

P.S. You have great Latex skills!

Hello Calvin, thanks for your response. I looked round for an appropriate discussion board or else a contact email but when I found none, I posted a note instead.

(1) Alright, I understand this. (2) I am not sure this is included in the formatting documentation, or else I missed it. I'll take note of this going forward. I can see that you've posted the answer for me. Thanks. (3) Okay, I see. I understand this better now.

Thanks again!

Notes are a great way to contact us! It also allows the community to help you out by offering advice / guidance.

For more information, you can refer to the Math Formatting Guide. There should be an immediate link when you are writing a solution.

In general, any site that display math equations using MATJAX / LATEX, will require you to denote the relevant portions that should be encoded. We use \(\) \backslash( \quad \backslash) , while other sites may use $ $ or <math> </math>.

Apart from this instance, how do you find your Brilliant experience?

@Calvin Lin I'm absolutely geeking out here and enjoying the experience. Brilliant is splendid! I wish I knew about the site earlier on. I randomly stumbled upon it today while doing a bit of number theory research.

Now that I've cleared up this formatting problem, it should be even more interesting. And I think I'll be willing to give Brilliant2Brilliant^2 a shot shortly. I got the Android app also so I can have more Brilliant days.

@Oyekola Oyekole That's great to hear! I'm glad that you are geeking out on our site and loving it :) Let me warn you that it can get addictive!

What number theory research are you working on?

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Calvin Lin Hahaha I can already tell that it is addictive. I've hardly done very much else over the past day.

I recalled a tough number theory question from a paper I took last October: i.e. the GRE Subject Test in Math. I was trying to see if there was an analytical way to solve it, because during the exam I used some time wasting brute force. I'm still looking.

Sadly by ETS rules, I am not permitted to go into detail about any of the questions on the exam, or create a similar question for the sake of review by a third party.
