why does gravity attract?

I find gravity very exciting. I still dont understand why matter attracts. people say that between any two bodies in space there is a force of attraction. well my question is what is the origin and cause of this force. I find it very non-intuative. Does matter attract to get lower state of energy . If matter is stable then why does it attract?

ur correct that it is completly non intuative but gravity was somthin created by newton....he saw few penomenon n gave his theory..the theory explaind all phenomenon of that time n thus gravity ws born...actually u can giv ur own theory explainin these pheno.. n if ur succesful in that then gravity wont exist...but i think its virtually impossible..
