Wiki Collaboration Parties - Solving linear systems using matrices + Common Misconceptions

This week, we will be improving:

Target AudienceLevel 3 AlgebraLevel 1-3, All(?)
MotivationTo be decidedTo avoid common misconceptions and learn from mistakes
Meeting at11/27 6:30pm PDT, 11/28 8am IST11/28 8:00pm PDT, 11/29 9:30 am IST
Chatroom#Mathematics#Mathematics

Each meeting will be conducted over Slack chat and will last for approximately 60-90 minutes. We will achieve the following:

  1. (5 mins) Figure out the target audience, and their motivation for reading the page
  2. (20 mins) (Quick review of examples) Discuss what we love / don't love
  3. (15 mins) Ensure we have a complete list of examples
  4. (15 mins) Discuss how to organize various sections of the page
  5. (10 mins) Settle on the final structure of the page
  6. (5 mins) Assign out sections to write over the week

If you have any questions, please comment below!

In addition, we will be hosting wiki mentoring sessions, where you work 1 on 1 with a staff member. You will learn how to organize a great wiki page, by thinking about the relevant, engagement, and organization of the material. This will help you improve your explanation and presentation skills!

This is available on a limited basis. If you are interested, please let me know.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Sir, can't we start a wiki explaining the Mersenne Prime? Because we have a pretty nice wiki about Prime Numbers.

So can you please add this for one of the upcoming parties?

Thanks Nicole Tay Xuming Liang Xiaoying Qin Ivan Koswara Sachin Vishwakarma Agnishom Chattopadhyay Julian Poon Eli Ross Andrew Ellinor Zandra Vinegar for participating in the List of Common Misconceptions Wiki Collaboration.

  1. We decided the layout of the landing page - List of questions, sorted by topic / subtopic
  2. We decided the structure of an individual page - Statement, Why people think it’s true/false, Correct answer + Proof, Common Rebuttals, Relevant pages
  3. We brainstormed for simple misconceptions that one comes across in Algebra and Number Theory
  4. We volunteered to write up individual pages

I'm in Sir!

Because the experience of the Black Hole Wiki Collaboration was another brainstorming something. Most probably we could get nothing but chaos, if you're not on the role!

BTW, everything in the Brilliant Lounge?

Great, looking forward to seeing you there.

Yea, we recognize that it's not easy to take control and direct the wiki collaboration, which is why we're going to mostly run these sessions.
