Wiki Collaboration Party - Composite Figures

Thanks for your participation in the collaborative process last week. Those are really fun sessions that we've been having, and I hope to see more of you join in :)

Over the last week, numerous people like Andrei Golovanov, Sandeep Bhardwaj, Pranshu Gaba, Zandra Vinegar, Pi Han Goh, Vishnu Bhagyanath, Chris Hambacher, Kenny Lau, have been writing up Symmetry and Propositional Logic Word Problems. I am amazed at the quality of these pages, and it goes to show what the community can achieve when our powers combine. There are still a few minor parts that could be improved on, and I would appreciate if you help fill in the remaining gaps.

This week, we will be improving:

Wiki pageComposite Figures - Intermediate
Current statusBrainstorming
Target AudienceLevel 3 Geometry
MotivationTo be decided
Meeting at8/29 8am PDT, 830pm IST
Chatroom#Mathematics

Each meeting will be conducted over Slack chat and will last for approximately 60-90 minutes. We will achieve the following:

  1. (5 mins) Figure out the target audience, and their motivation for reading the page
  2. (20 mins) (Quick review of examples) Discuss what we love / don't love
  3. (15 mins) Ensure we have a complete list of examples
  4. (15 mins) Discuss how to organize various sections of the page
  5. (10 mins) Settle on the final structure of the page
  6. (5 mins) Assign out sections to write over the week

We have also taken the opportunity to update the Brilliant Wiki Collaboration Graph Part 2. As you can see, the amount of collaboration has greatly increased, and we are seeing more bundles of people according to the topics of the pages that they work on.

If you have any questions, please comment below!

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Once again, we had a successful session of understanding how to collaborate on a great wiki page! Here is a summary of the discussion.

  1. Figure out the motivation - Identifying ways to break down a mixed figure into simple identifiable figures

  2. Discuss the examples

  3. Figure out what we liked and did not like

  4. Work out the structure of the pages

  5. Finalize the structure and assign out the sections

Thanks to @Zandra Vinegar for helping to lead a lively discussion. Thanks @Pi Han Goh and @Satyajit Mohanty for voluntering to fill in more details. Thanks to Vishnu Bhagyanath, @Pranshu Gaba and @Nihar Mahajan for participating in the discussion.

If anyone wants to help fill in more details, please let me know, and we can find sections for you to work on!

A composite figure is made up of two or more geometric figures. For an example, a rectangle surmounted by a triangle, as a whole represents a composite figure.
