Good for u Mr genius happens I did that wrong too thought that water is the universal solvent as it's has dual character 50% ionic 50% covalent

In a solution the substance that constitutes the smallest portion in volume is the solute and vice versa.Hence water is the solute in this our case

Here, Water has smaller proportion as compared to Alcohol. So Water is a solute.
