Solute: In a solution the component which dissolves and constitutes smaller proportion of a solution is called a solute. For example, in a Sugar solution, Sugar is a solute.
Here, Water has smaller proportion as compared to Alcohol. So Water is a solute.

Solute is always in lesser quantity than solvent(alcohol).

ok. got it. what would be the solute when 5 litres of water is dissolved in 5 litres of alcohol?

In a solution the substance that constitutes the smallest portion in volume is the solute and vice versa.Hence water is the solute in this our case
