A Problem on Salt Analysis!

Chemistry Level 4

A colourless salt ( A ) (A) ,soluble in water,gives a mixture of three gases ( B ) , ( C ) , ( D ) (B),(C),(D) along with water vapours. ( C ) (C) is not oxidisable. ( B ) (B) turns red litmus blue, ( C ) (C) turns blue litmus red and gas ( D ) (D) is neutral towards litmus paper. Gas ( B ) (B) is also obtained when ( A ) (A) is heated with N a O H \ce{NaOH} and gives brown ppt with K X 2 H g I X 4 \ce{{K}_{2}Hg{I}_{4}} . Solution thus obtained gives white ppt ( E ) (E) with C a Cl X 2 \ce{Ca{Cl}_{2}} solution in presence of C H X 3 C O O H \ce{C{H}_{3}COOH } . ( E ) (E) decolourises M n O 4 X / H X + \ce{{Mn{O}_{4}}^{-}/{H}^{+}} . Gas ( C ) (C) turns lime water milky while gas ( D ) (D) burns with blue flame and is fatal when inhaled. Find the molecular mass of salt ( A ) (A) .

The compounds are:

A A : ( N H 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 (NH_4)_2C_2O_4

B B : N H 3 NH_3

C C : C O 2 CO_2

D D : C O CO

E E : C a C 2 O 4 CaC_2O_4

I still can't figure out why the colour of compound C is given as red though.

Yes correct. And C O 2 C{O}_{2} is acidic in nature, so it gives red colour in litmus paper test.

It would be good if you can edit the problem statement a little bit. What I thought you meant to say was that the colour of compound C is red.

Ok. I'll edit the problem statement

@Saarthak Marathe A good problem, but should it not be mentioned when the three gases are produced?

You should clarify that C is non oxidizable
Otherwise it can be inferred as SO2 also .
