Are Your Basics Clear?

How many of the following statements is/are correct?

  • A small charge can develop a charge many times greater than itself.

  • Two bodies with like charges can attract each other.

  • A charged body can attract an uncharged body.

  • C u X + \ce{Cu^+} has same mass as C u \ce{Cu} .

  • An electric charge can experience a force due to a field produced by itself.

1,2,3 are correct

E x p l a n a t i o n Explanation :

  1. A small charge can produce more charge by induction method.

  2. When a body with small positive charge is brought in front of a body with same sign of charge but many many times greater in magnitude then attractive force due to induction dominates.

  3. A charge body can attract an uncharged body by inductive effect.

  4. When a body loses electron then it loses mass though negligible small

  5. A charge can never feel effect due to its own field.

I think the word 'produced' should not have been used in the first option. Charges cannot be produced or destroyed by conservation of charge. Otherwise a good question, especially the 2 option is tricky.

Yup I totally agree that produced should not be used

Can you explain in further detail?

but what about when a charge is kept in front of a grounded conductor ? doesn't it feel force even though no other charge is there ? @Aniket Sanghi

Charge is indeed there ! The charge is induced charge on conductor!
