ha ha an easy one indeed, the wording is what throws most people off

Yes. The reason why I decided to do this problem.

And I appreciate the reminder! I've started relearning algebra at an advanced age, and like many fools before me I've been looking at these problems before performing an actual review of the subject. BTW, Sharky, if x is your age, mine is 5x+3.

@John M Lewis – Lol..nice..beginner algebra :)
@John M Lewis – So you're 63?
Tricky one
The wording wasnt good here. If it had said 'divided by A half' then it wouldve made more sense.
yes this is right. the english is the tricky part here. i also did this wrong in my 1st attempt.
Interesting ..... but how have u thought about this
Why not 15+25=40 ...... :(( ? I'm not good at Eng so I thought like that :((
This kid is a really an Australian.

Don't know what that's supposed to mean, but sure.
Exactly.You are correct.
Nice one Krishna :D
such a nice question but i cant solve ;)
I stand corrected, indeed it came out as multiplication. after computing and not guessing....
You can model dividing by halves just like dividing by integers. We typically illustrated x/y by seeing how many groups you have if you make groups of y. That is 20/5 is 4 groups of 5. Now x/(1/2) is how many groups you can make of 1/2's. That is 20/(1/2) is 40 groups of 1/2's since 20 = (40, 1/2's) this can also be extended to moduling how to divide any ratio of rational numbers.
Amazing .,.I liked it...
why we imagine only it mathematically. Don't you think that dividing by half is equal to 30/2
Since when did dividing by half means multiplication by any stretch of intellect? Good grief.....

I think the author actually meant 30/ 0.5 hence 30*2. I agree that it is arguable as English you would not say x divided by 2
When you divide by 1/2, you are figuring out how many halves can be taken from 30 wholes. Since you know that it takes 2 halves for every whole, you can think of dividing by 1/2 as the same as multiplying by 2.
prove according statement not by tricks.
We have
3 0 ÷ 2 1 + 2 5 = 3 0 × 2 + 2 5
= 6 0 + 2 5 = 8 5
great one.
Most people get confused in dividing by 1/2 but when done with concentration this question is a cakewalk. 30/1/2 + 25=60+25=85.
ur true its lyk a cakewalk
I feel the question is incorrectly worded it should read "divided by a half" not "divided by half"
real answer as worded is 27
30 ÷ (30÷2) + 25 =27
Answer divided by a half is 85 30÷ (1/2) +25 =27
Good question, this is a fun one. The wording isn't just tricky, however; I would argue it's incorrect (and therefore ambiguous). We should say "divided by ONE half" (or "divided IN half" if we mean divided by 2). We would not say "Half of 2/3 is third" but rather "half of 2/3 is one third." I'm trying to think if there are other instances in which we use "half" this way and cannot think of one.
I agree that the wording is incorrect, at first I thought it was asking for 'thirty divided by fifteen (half of thirty)'.

A person can say divided by 2. Im sure it is differentiatable by saying "divided by two" and "divided by half"
(30 / 0.5) + 25 (30 2 / 0.5 2) + 25 (60/1)+25 60+25 = 85
tricky one indeed...
Well essy , common sense should be apply which enable to solve the problem
I know for this problem you could just say 30 2+25=85 but an alternative way is to do 30 divided by a half (1/2) plus 25 is equal to 85. Either way will turn out to be 30 2 but I just wanted to show you the other way so if your practicing dividing fractions you can. Good Luck!
That's stupid, using English 30 divided by half is 15 not 60... use numbers instead of English or question is epic fail.
30 divided by half is 3 0 ÷ 2 1 = 6 0 . I don't know which English you speak but this is what you should be reading.
This question should have said one half, so not to confuse people that you mean in half
expression is 30 / 1upon2 +25 that is 30 X2 +25 =85 Ans
It says " be careful ", most people do ( 3 0 / 2 ) + 2 5 = 4 0 , but that is asi it was "thirty divided by two"... but, with "thirty divided by half" it must be [ 3 0 / ( 1 / 2 ) ] + 2 5 , which is equal to ( 3 0 ∗ 2 ) + 2 5 = 8 5 , pretty easy.
The wording is very clear. It is the difference between divided BY half and divided IN half. Dividing one whole by a half means, how many halves are in one whole? It takes two halves to equal 1 whole. So, what is 30 wholes divided by half is the same as How many halves are in 30 wholes?
This one was a game of words. Thirty divided by half (30/0.5) plus 25 gives 85.
brain games 30/1/2+25=60+25=85
30/1/2=30*2=60......THEREFORE.......60+25=85

Well this is one of my favorite tricks- Dividing by half. Dividing by half can be imagined only mathematically and it actually means multiplying by 2. (As multiplication is inverse of division) Thus the answer is 3 0 ∗ 2 + 2 5 = 8 5 . Done :)
